Was Leonard as ragged on as Mayweather is?

Its not the same situation especially if you consider that if mayweather was offered cotto in 2004/05/06 he likely would have jumped all over it, at what point was leonard willing to face hagler other than at the downside of his career? Its crazy how dude had to basically change his name to be awknolwedged.Leonard fought Hagler only after Hagler started slipping. He deliberately waited for that. Cotto-Mayweather size difference is larger than Hagler-Leonard.
It is not quite the same situation...
(Of course prime for prime and pound for pound, Hagler is on a different level than Cotto is.)
Also, if you think about it, everyone is giving leonard credit for fighting hagler, thus completely not remembering how he "won" the fight. this is proof to all these dumbasses who say mayweather wont be remembered in 10 years, when most of you give credit to leonard for fighting hagler and basically getting a gift in the process. If mayweather beat cotto like that, none of you would give him credit for anything but possibly paying off judges etc.Comment

i was responding to the OP, he said all of us will love mayweather in 10 years just like we love ali and SRL, why would we? SRL and ALI are completly diff then mayweather, mayweather quit in his prime without fighting guys like cotto/marg and such, sugar ray leonard fought hagler once and retired, ya i woulda liked to see a rematch but he still at least fought him...mayweather's career is great when u look at his wins..but popularity and other stuff isnt even in the same galaxy as Ali's or SRLComment

It doesnt matter Hagler was still a force to be reckoned with and Leonard took him on.Originally Posted by wmute

If thats how you want to remember it, then you could say the same about mayweather taking on undefeated p4p champs like hatton/chico. You are almost implying that mayweather has taken 0 risks his whole career.Comment

I've thought about this before, actually. I think you're completely right. In the moment people complain and ***** about an athlete and then, when their career is over, they are forced to step back and take stock of what they really accomplished. Once all they have is a resume and some footage of their in-ring exploits, all the naysaying disappears.I don't think it gets any worse than calling a press conference saying you have a huge announcement, inviting Marvin Hagler, standing in the middle of the ring and saying, I'M RETIRING, NOT FIGHTING MARVIN HAGLER.
Yet Sugar Ray is beloved now. I'll say it again and again. In ten years, you will LOVE Mayweather just like you love Ali, just like you love Leonard. Hated in their time, missed badly after.
Further- we have to be 100% realistic here. Unless Cotto becomes pound for pound, or rules his division for at least a few years- in the grand scheme of things, when looking back, nobody will ask, "Why didn't Floyd fight Miguel Cotto..." , if the answer is anything like "Who....that solid yet beatable champion who lost his belt not long after Floyd retired? Why would Mayweather have fought him..?"
Only similarly celebrated fighters will be glaring weaknesses on Floyd's resume. I think he should fight him, just to silence current critics, but you're right- if Cotto somehow blew it losing to Margarito...I think the demand for the sport's best to fight him would be irrevocably tarnished.Comment

Do you know the circumstances of what you are talking about?
I doubt that or I am very surprised you guys type this crap.
Leonard was making his 2nd comeback when fighting Hagler, which he could have made earlier than that, but he wanted no part of Hagler until he saw how much he slowed down and lost his boxing finesse when he watched him fight a relatively crude fighter such as Mugabi. Certainly not after seeing him destroy the same fighter that gave him the fight of his life.
Leonard was involved in a number of ***** moves in his career (rematches, negotiations, Pryor...), which make Mayweather's retiring before facing the winner of Cotto vs Margarito pale in comparison.
Stop hating what is here and nuthugging fighters from the past just because you don't know their story very well...Comment
