I think SRL had somewhat more power than Mayweather, also more guts and a willingness to engage. I mentioned this on another thread, but wanted to reiterate. That, more than anything else, is why I think Mayweather falls short of Leonard's high regard. Not because of the power, but the latter....he's never taken any real risks. I think because he's a tad chinny. Corley rocked him pretty good, and if Corley were anything resembling a finisher, he'd have stopped Mayweather. Not that this makes him a worse fighter, but I think this is partly why he just doesn't take risks...to worried about getting his ass KO'd. Leonard didn't seem to give a ****.

I mean seriously, nobody hates Ali anymore.

And i would hardly call Mayweather "hated." He just wasnt the fighter OR the type of person thats going to be adored by the public, ever. And boxing isnt popular enough right now for Mayweather to even be remembered by the public in 10 years.
Yep, nobody liked the guy, mostly because of his mouth and arrogance. Personally, I think he was one of the most amazing talents ever, but certainly not invincible, like so many seem to think, and like many other people, couldn't stand his bull****.

Mayweather is just very unpopular, not hated like Ali.

Ray didn't duck anyone, I mean that **** he pulled in the rematch with Duran was *****-made lol, but that's about it. And didn't he leave Hagler hangin cause of an eye problem? Doctors advice due to a detatched retina or somthin? Not only that, but Ray jumped on the oppertunity to fight Hagler and Hearns.
          Aaron Pryor begs to differ.

Then why are you commenting on things you know nothing about?

People forget that Leonard publicly talked a ton of trash (and not very well in my opinion, because it contrasted so strangely with his image) despite his reputation as the golden boy. He was trying to be Ali in this respect, but did not manage it very well.

This was taken from another thread here on boxingscene. These are SRL's own words:

Talk about anything boxing related here. Where the boxing discussion is always Non Stop!

I remember sitting ringside at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas with Michael J.Fox for Marvin Hagler's fight against John "The Beast" Mugabi. Marvin was a guy I watched religiously. I knew he'd fought two tough fights against Tommy Hearns and Roberto Duran and I knew he was getting older, then against Mugabi I could see the fights were taking their toll. He beat Mugabi but he was slowing down. I turned to Michael - we were drinking a few beers - and I told him, 'I can beat this guy.' Michael looked at me like I was crazy. 'Ray', he said, 'have another beer.'

I would say this thread has been a huge success in getting my point across. A lot of people are starting posts saying, "Man, I didn't know that" about Leonard and a lot of people are in here calling him a ***** and the like. The point is Leonard was very pampered and got to have his way every time he fought. He was the media's darling and he got away with some Floyd would be CRUCIFIED for today.

Not fighting Miguel Cotto? Big ****ing deal when you look at the **** Leonard pulled in his career.

I appreciate all the info provided by guys like Silencers and Live Dog, etc. It is possible to have a decent conversation. I like Leonard and I guarantee a lot of the other guys in this thread do, but you can still tell the truth about him.

Really, if Mayweather was fighting at the same time as those guys he may have become champ and then would have been beaten by all of those above. Apart from Hagler maybe as Mayweather would not have fought at middleweight. He may not even have fought at WW with the talent that was there back then.

If you consider who was fighting at the weights around where Mayweather would have fought back then, it is very, very unlikely he would be undefeated or even close to a six weight champ. Pryor, Arguello, Cervantes, Benitez etc all at the lower weights.
Mayweather was smaller than Leonard, hence he would lose to bigger men (Hearns, Hagler). It is very simple, and it has nothing to do on how good Leonard or Mayweather are.

As for the 140 class, Cervantes was old as hills, Arguello didnt have the style to beat Mayweather at any weight. Benitez and Pryor would be closer fights, with Pryor being the interesting one, as Benitez wasnt exactly very focusedi in the ring, and especially in the gym.
