Chavez vs. Taylor I...why did Steele stop the fight!?!?!

How bad would it have looked if Steele let Taylor continue after not responding and still 5 seconds left (there was almost 5 seconds left as someone else mentioned)? If Chavez landed another hard right hand who knows what would have happened to Taylor and Steele would have been criticized as being a irresponsible ref and it may have cost him a suspension or even his job. Plus it's not his job to be charitable by letting a fighter continue just because they may be ahead. He did the right thing though it's a shame because I would have liked to have seen Taylor win the fight.Last edited by βetamax; 06-04-2008, 11:12 PM.Comment

Cuz Taylor was done. Don't matter how much time was left, it's not the referee's job to keep the time. He asked Taylor a question and Mel don't not respond to Steele's satisfaction; end of fight, period.
Taylor was never the same after that fight, he was in the hospital for like a week from swallowing his own blood, bruised & battered ribs and cheekbone. Chavez busted him up and Steele witnessed this first hand, he knew the kind of beating Taylor was recieving. It was one of those fights where one fighter may be winning the rounds, however the other fighter is doing more physical damage. And in this fight the damage was extreme.Comment

Steele made a decision that ended with a poor result... but that's not his job to worry about. I wish he wouldn't have stopped the fight, but I cant fault him for doing so.Comment

No, he made a poor decision which inhibited Taylor from seeing a decision. I can fault him for making the decision, because in my opinion (and many others) it was a poor decision. Just like I could fault some NBA ref who called a phantom foul at the end of a game which adversely affected the game.
There is no handbook on stopping fights. It is the ref's discretion. Steele made a bad call in my opinion.Comment

You have a problem with that? I'm content enough.
I've seen Chavez get his ass handed to him and won't make excuses for it, this particular night however, he won plain and simple. You and others are making excuses for it.Comment

Taylor wasn't in the hospital for a week. Just another boxing myth. If he was, do you really think he would have gotten a license to fight in Nevada only five months later after suffering "extreme damage". Chavez fans just love to overdramatize this whole thing.Comment
