In the world of mma kimbo has always and will always be nothing more than a sideshow intended to draw crowds. Much like Butterbean was to boxing, Kimbo will never be a serious contender. MMA will surpass boxing but not cuz of kimbo. Because their top level fighters are smart guys with college degrees that dont need a Arum or King or Schaeffer to tell them whats "in their best interest" They go out and fight their best opposition every fight because they arent worried about losing money or their careers ending if they lose because they have respectable dayjobs anyway.
Man, Im sorry, I hate MMA but...............

MMA will never surpass boxing. It will never have mainstream appeal because it appears far too brutal to the casual consumer. It will never be accepted by the mainstream press as a legitimate sport in its current form and thus its popularity is has a pre-built in limit.
In the UK MMA has its fans, but it is basically seen as a shockingly violent freak show.Last edited by abadger; 06-02-2008, 04:48 PM.Comment

I think it's gonna surpass boxing. I hate MMA and it hurts me to say it, but I think it is. I was listening to sports radio today, and they wuoldnt stop talking about the Kimbo fight and undercard, and the fights last night on VS.
Never have they talked about boxing like this. All the casual fans loved it. The Faber fight last night was a big hit, but yet we were stuck with sorry ass Hatton and weak ass Paulie.Thats not the way to hype up boxing. I mean all i have been hearing every where I go wwas about Kimbo and the other fights. Damn, boxing needs to step it up and put some major fighters no Saturday nights or something. I never thought I would see the day,
Boxing, PLEASE DONT LET THIS BULL**** TAKE OVER......PLEASE!!!!!!
When a fighter has a say on who he's going to fight of course he's gonna act in his best interest! That's only human nature!
One solution is doing what the UFC does. Maybe that's the only solution, putting everyone under contract for a number of fights, divide boxing into smaller orgs with NO BUMS or CANS, no padded records. Everyone would have at least 4 losses and we would have allot more excitement.Comment

The problem with boxing is just one: Fighters get to choose who they fight for like 90% of the time. Take my boy Floyd (i love his skills) and Joe the joke Calzaghe for two solid examples of this ****. One choses to fight Oscar yet again and not the more logical Cotto, the other takes on +40 year olds in a desperate attempt to capture a place in history. You can say all the **** about these fighters but the fact is they do what they can to be successful playing this game.

MMA companies like UFC and WEC promote the BRAND first, and fighter later so they have more freedom at controlling what kind of product they put out there.Comment

5 of my friends have took up boxing this past year due to the big fights over here, Calzaghe vs Kessler, Mayweather vs Hatton etc and with Amir Khan coming through on free TV and David Haye.
You've got fighters here which will appeal to all audiences.Comment

mainstream media wants to see bar brawls like what they saw saturday night. When they see what mma is relaly is, example being on the ground 4.5/5 rounds people will start changing the channelsComment
