Floyd Jr. should have never left 135...

Horus, as always, does make some valid points about Floyd Mayweather. I have yet to see a succinct defence of the so-called "double standard". It is absolutely true that Mayweather's capture of titles across huge differences in weight classes is massively impressive, and also true that no matter how much people deride the idea, Mayweather will, in the end go down as an all time great. I think many on boxingscene should take a look at their attitudes and opinions towards Mayweather and ask themselves whether or not they have anything to do with him as a boxer, or have more to do with his questionable personality and the natural hatred that seems to spring up in some people whenever they consider a truly dominant sportsman.Thats why when it's all said and done Floyd will be one of the greatest fighters to ever do it, if not the greatest....
If you look at it.....
For People to consider Floyd being in a Fair Fight....
1. The Guy has to be bigger than Floyd
2. Cant be the Same Size Height and weight
3. Floyd cant fight nobody Smaller than him under no circumstances
4. Floyd cannot fight no bigger fighters in higher weight division who are not ranked at least #1 or #2 in the division...FOR IT TO BE CONSIDER A REAL CHALLENGE
i.e (Pacquiao vs. David Diaz)
WHAT KIND OF STANDARDS are Those to put on a Fighter....
for example If Floyd fought Felix Sturm right now for the middle weight title I bet people will give Floyd ****.....Saying that this is not a fair fight....
not taking into account that, that would be Floyd's 6Th weight class and Him fighting The WBA Champion.. and also Floyd would also probably be outweigh.... by 20 pounds come fight night night..!!
The standards beset on Floyd are so unreasonable that If you even trying to mention to place those kinda standards on someone else....You would sound crazy....
For example....
What if I say Cotto would have to go up 5 weight classes and get 6 titles
Mostly the WBC Belts while staying undefeated....
before I even consider Cotto to be in the same sentence as Mayweather.....
Would that be unreasonable...
Because Cotto started @ 140
so he would go up to LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT
and capture titles at all weights proceeding LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT while staying undefeated... Before I would I consider him a great fighter like Floyd....
How would Cotto Fans Accept those standards.......
But guess what That what Floyd has Done.......To be consider the greatest of his generation and P4P Best Today...
He came from 130
and has gotten titles from
130
135
140
147
154
While Staying Undefeated....
NO OTHER FIGHTER IN HISTORY HAS EVER DONE THIS....!!! NOT ONE
Not
Sugar Ray L, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, Bernard Hopkins, Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell, Marvin Hagler, Aaron Pryor, Willy Pep, Roy Jones,
Sugar Ray Robinson....NOBODY....
This is why Floyd Fans say Thats when it's all said and done Floyd will be one of the greatest fighters to ever do it, if not the greatest....
As for Floyd's weight, it is crazy to try and pretend that he is not a small welterweight, he is, especially in a division full of weight drained JMW and MWs. At the moment Floyd is a natural 140lb fighter, I would say, but one who can box convincingly anywhere reasonably above that limit.
I think Mayweather should get more respect than he does, especially since he can do what no other active fighter can do. This is a boxing fourm after all, and Mayweather is the best boxer we have right now, so neither him nor his fans deserve the kind of hate you sometimes see on these boards.Comment

Good post, man.
Floyd fighting Oscar at 154 is equivalent to Cotto fighting Joe Calzaghe right now. Brilliant!
Cotto would go down, to some, as the best fighter of all time if he beat Calzaghe by SD.
Yet, Floyd wins a title in his 5th weight class and he's dissed incessantly. LOLComment

Another excellent post! People don't appreciate what they have until it's gone. Sad but true...Horus, as always, does make some valid points about Floyd Mayweather. I'll tell you...
I'm watching Mayweather-Corrales (yes I know it's at 130, not 135) and Floyd looks just absolutely fantastic. Seriously, he looks almost perfect. Great jab, excellent combinations, fantastic elusivity, he had it all.
Although he struggled with Castillo at 135, he did well in his other two fights. I wish he would have stayed down there and fought Casamayor, Freitas, Lazcano, etc.
There would be no talk about ducking whoever I don't think. I think Floyd has a right to not want to fight Cotto, probably because Cotto is a giant next to him, but Floyd really has put himself in that boat by entering into 147. If you are going to claim the lineal championship in a division, you are going to be expected to fight the best in that division.
135 didn't even really fall off when most of the good fighters previously mentioned left. We now have Nate Campbell, Juan Diaz, Julio Diaz, Kid Diamond, etc.
I don't know, what do you all think about this? How cool would it have been if Floyd had stayed at 130 until the Chavez fight (when he said he couldn't make that limit anymore), and then never have left 135?
He cant even make 140 anymore, hence him fighting Ricky at 147.

No, Im sure of it. Just like SSM cant make 135 anymore.you just cant, thats why fighters move up. Floyd has fought maybe 3-4 opponents his whole career that were "bigger" then him. do the research....
what a dumb threadLast edited by C'MONMANG'; 05-06-2008, 03:21 PM.Comment

Floyd can EASILY make 140 today.
I guess it speaks to Floyd's talent and ability that it almost seems unfair to think about him fighting guys his own size.
Cotto moved up because he HAD to. Floyd moved up because he is a greedy ****.Comment
