Name any other fighter that better than Cotto now in the welterweight division. There is none, if Floyd wants to be the best he'll have to fight him. If he chooses not to fight him and retire he will be known as a coward and a ducker who cherrypicked his way to the top.

Trust me that perception will fade after decades once he is old, retired and his name is locked into ATG history books. And all people will look to judge him by is his record and if there are any great fighters on his record.

Like Leonard with Duran, Hearns and Hagler.


Does Cotto represent that type of opponent for Floyd? Because Floyd will go down as one of the all-time greats either way. His legacy is already locked.

The pure Floyd hate on these forums is clear and obvious to any human eye. So you can understand why some of us are fighting in Floyd's favor unstead of against him.

Why can't Floyd just fight a welter champ? Last I checked Sugar Ray Leonard wasn't available.

To Answer my own question:



It is a legacy enhancing fight in the sense that Floyd would have beaten "the best guys" in five (at worst, four) weight classes.

People have short memories, and the haters always fall back on "who has he beaten at 147?"

130: Chicanito, Corrales, etc
135: Castillo
140: Hatton
147: Cotto (tbd)
154: Delahoya

An aging Muhammad Ali beat Foreman in 1974, Frazier in 1975, and Norton in 1976. He fought lesser contenders in between. At the time did he get all the credit he deserved? Probably not. But history looks very kindly on him, because he was a fighting champion. I understand that there won't be a title defense once a month like with Joe Louis anymore. But that doesn't mean we can't have world champions that act like world champions again.
