thats it.
He has already beaten Quintana brutally.
So basically what you are saying is that if he beats Margarito, it's a done deal?

And the only way to get that Prestige is too come into the fight with Mayweather
With actually beating two champions FOR TWO BELTS, not earning his belts by fighting for the vacent title.....
But beating a Champion for his belt..!
That's what Mayweather had to do..
Thats what all the Greats had to do..Cotto needs to get those other two belts. To make a fight with Mayweather a great fight...
In which TWO GREAT fighters would be fighting, Not Just ONE....(MAYWEATHER)

He has also slaughtered Quintana... why in god's name would he rematch him? That fight was a brutal beatdown. The Mayweather-Hatton rematch makes more sense IMO, and that is saying a lot.
So I guess the question to you is, does he need to be the champion in spirit (which he clearly would be by beating Margarito, because he would hold wins over the stripped IBF champ and the current WBO champ, as well as being the WBA champ), or does he actually need to hold the paper belts over his shoulder after taking two useless fights (the winner of the vacant IBF title and a rematch with Quintana)?

CHAMP : FLOYD MAYWEATHER 39-0 (25)
1. MIGUEL COTTO 32-0 (26)
2. SHANE MOSLEY 44-5 (37) beaten by Cotto
3. CARLOS QUINTANA 25-1 (19) beaten by Cotto
4. PAUL WILLIAMS 33-1 (24)
5. ANTONIO MARGARITO 36-5 (26) beaten by Cotto
6. ZAB JUDAH 36-5 (25) beaten by Cotto
7. JOSHUA CLOTTEY 34-2 (20)
8. LUIS COLLAZO 28-3 (13)
9. KERMIT CINTRON 29-2 (27)
10. JACKSON BONSU 27-1 (23)
For anyone to say that Cotto has not done enough in his WW career to earn a shot at the Undisputed WW Champion is quite ****ing ridiculous.
