that pretty much put the argument to bed IMO

Tyson appealled to so many fans cause he brought the same thing Pavlik has that everybody wants to see wether u are black or white or Yellow what ever colour

I personally don't care about the color of a fighters skin. Unfortunately here in the states the media tends to care more about boxing when there is a good white american champion. Nothing against Kelly it isn't his fault.

its true to an extent. one because the majority of America is white. the average white person who doesn't watch boxing would be more interested in pavlik as opposed to a hypothetical black version of him (i.e. same type of personality, skills), not necesarily because hes racist, but because they can identify with him. Eminem would not have sold as many records in white suburbia if he were black, i dont think anyone can deny that. and you can't use tyson/ali as an example because their personality/skill trancended everything else.

and two because there arent many big white fighters compared to black. the same can be said of a black athlete entering and doing well in a white sport (i.e. tiger woods in golf, williams sisters in tennis, though i would consider them much more dominant than pavlik is to boxing at this point, but its similar...). theres a certain amount of shock value associated with it when it happens that brings more attention

there are endless instances of racism in america, though I wouldnt say this is one of them. i think the american people on this site understand this more

Pavlik is deserving of the title Taylor was'nt he had chances to redeem himself against Ouma ,Spinks and it almost seemed like he did'nt want it enough

Maybe it is to much of a coincidence for some people to believe 2 World Champions can be so popular & white without there being a racial element ,is it aslo a coincidence they both have come foward aggresive styles as aposed to negative defensive boxing like Witter

man i can agree on some parts here man.. but hatton hes got to be the most boring fighter ever, he spends 50% of the fight holding man! and i see all his fights since tzu so i kno that man! i seen about 6 or 7 witter fights n hes much more exciting fighter than hatton! pavlik is marketable cos he appelas to the workin/middle class white american who make up most the population and would get most of the ppv buys.. so rasicm in boxing is driven by the dolla these days. but outside of boxing its becos of other things man and goes back centurys

That's America for you! Historically speaking, "White America" has longed for white champions in the sport of boxing. People identify with who they look like or with who they match with racially, when it comes to boxing. It's no secret, it isn't rocket science, its the goddam truth. Puerto Ricans want to see Puerto Ricans win, Mexicans want to see Mexicans win, African Americans want to see African Americans win, and yes White people want to see white people win. Quite frankly there is nothing wrong with that either....we all have our own sense of cultural and racial pride we carry with us, some more than others.

So considering the fact that the "Majority" in America is "White People" and along comes a Kelly Pavlik, he'll be embraced like he's the reincarnation of Elvis, which is what you are witnessing now. Nothing against Pavlik, I believe he's a hell of a fighter, but had he been of a different persuasion, I don't believe the attention being granted to him now would be as equal. Just my opinion though.

Look how many times the "Gatti Act" was shown to the public. Gatti was reprocessed so many times it got ridiculous. Capitalism drives America....white champions, have the ability to produce more income, profit, and revenue in America so you will always see the attention given to them as somewhat overly abundant. All for the love of money.....

                your just being wierd

Joe Louis didn't act like an idiot like some of these guys today though did he?

....Yep, and it really just depends on the individual fighter and the perception surrounding him. Tyson was an idiot but he had a huge following. 90% of my white friends were all over his nuts back in the day. Ali was maybe the most popular and you also had Sugar Ray Leonard, Hagler, Holy, Foreman in the comeback, Oscar, and on and on. It has to do more with the fighter, and I'm not sure if America craves a white champion.

I'm sure this is directed at Pavlik, and he's a perfect example of the popularity of an individual fighter. He comes from a broken city where hope has vanished, he enters the ring to knock his opponents out in every fight, he never dances and runs, he has tremendous heart, and he seems like a good kid. What's not to like?

well considering america is a white country first and foremost then ofcourse. the same thing goes to black people. if a sucussful black person is in the limelight then they get talked about a lot too by black people.

Another thing I noticed about white champions, is that they're lighter skinned than the black champions
