The N-word is harsher but yes, it would be just to hype the fight. It wouldn't go well with Calzaghe's persona though, because he is the 'good guy'. Hopkins is the 'bad guy' and he has always played that role in his fights.
What about all the bad things he said about Puerto Ricans?
I don't think Alan Minter was a racist when he said 'I would never lose to a black man'. Minter said it to offend Hagler, get into his head and sell some tickets.
Nor do I think Greg Haugen is a racist when he said Chavez only fought mexican taxi drivers and that no poor, dirty mexicans could afford to see him fight JCC.
It was simply to sell tickets (over 100,000 people came to watch the fight) and Haugen apologized afterwards.Comment

True. there's a double standard. I'm not offended. I'm not going to mock indignation at the comment itself or the injustice of the circumstance.Comment

Yes but children read these statements as "Black& White".The N-word is harsher but yes, it would be just to hype the fight. It wouldn't go well with Calzaghe's persona though, because he is the 'good guy'. Hopkins is the 'bad guy' and he has always played that role in his fights.

What? The children? Have you ever seen TV? Have you ever been on the street? You can force people to play act... you can belittle actions and words in the press... it doesn't change reality. That's not the way to respond to that. The response should be... SO ****ING WHAT? He said white boy... he said ******... he said ******... who the **** cares... We all still live together.Comment

I was a little offended at first being a white boy myself. but it lasted on a few minutes. he didnt insult white people with a racial slur, he just said he would never lose to a white boy. If he said, white people are honkey mofo crackers, then that would mean he was racist. Maybe he just feels he would never lose to a white boy. It is an ignorant thing to say and ballsy, but he is known for being ballsy and outspoken. The Trinidad press tours are a perfect example. He took the Puerto Rican flag and through it on the ground....that 100x worse then saying id never lose to a white boy. Plus if Joe beats him down Hops will eat those words.Last edited by C'MONMANG'; 01-25-2008, 10:23 AM.Comment

Racism is a blight, but I wasn't that offended by Hopkin's comment, I thought it was reminiscent of a certain compatriate of mine, Alan Minter. Sorry to those that know the sotry already, but for the sake of some of the younger posters: Minter was an above average middleweight, an Olympic bronze medal winner, British, European and Commonwealth champion (49-39-9 with 23KO) skillful but prone to cuts and ko'able. He finally took his chance and won the WBA and WBC belts, unfortunately he ran smack **** into Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Minter made a big mistake, he said 'no black man is going to take my title away' (he later tried to retract it by saying he meant 'no man'). Hagler destroyed him, the fight was stopped and Hagler got showered with bottles and coins from the crowd. At the time, there were still alot of openly racist people, most not to a great degree, more through ignorance. The crowd could not handle it.
The point of the story though, is that comments (even if there is no real malice behind it, remember Hopkins has some close white friends) can come back and bite you on the arse.
The real danger I find is that what the UK calls 'political correctness' (you guys have the same right) only catches out the careless and the ******, the really nasty people can still operate because they know the rules and they can play them. Political correctness does not eliminate racism, it just makes the racists go underground.
I was lucky, I was brought up to be tolerant. I remember hearing the 'n' word being used at school when I was nine or ten, I repeated it at home in front of my father and I didn't sit down for a week! (still can't bring myself to use it, even if I'm quoting someone else - a couple of my black friends find this hilarious and purposely use it amongst each other to laugh at my discomfort).
At the end of the day its a boxing match between to great fighters, who are passionately supported by their respective fans, thats always going to lead to rows, which will escalte into name calling - some will learn to walk away, some won't. That's life, sorry for boring the **** out of you allComment

Great. PC nonsense only catches those who don't mean it and apologize for it. Real bigots don't say it for anyone to hear. If I would add just one thing... Boxers are supposed to say the worst possible thing about their opponent before the fight... it's part of the tradition. So, let's not get too worked up about anything said.Comment

An intelligent person is not offended because Popkins saying that, is like a bum saying that. Popkins never showed any real intelligence outside the ring.
And you can tell, the guy is not very smart.
And please, don't be fooled by his promoting skills because they're garbage.
Who is Popkins to affect the white community? A nobody. He has no affect.
Let the fool believe in his dreams.Comment
