KSwizzy, how highly do you rate Mike Tyson?
Many people put him in the top 10 heavyweights ever, but his standard of opposition isn't particularly impressive. The same is true of many boxers who are considered ATG.
Ali fought during the best heavyweight era, and Robinson fought some great opponents at welterweight and middleweight. But there are a lot of fighters who didn't do anything on that level. We still consider them great because they looked very good against the best opposition available.
There are people with better records than Marciano who are not rated as highly as him. A fighter who has never lost tends to get rated highly, even if he hasn't beaten an ATG. An example of this is how some people claim that Ike could be the undisputed heavyweight champion right now if he'd stayed out of trouble.
The people who consider Calzaghe a great fighter might be wrong, but they aren't going against boxing tradition in rating someone highly despite a lack of ATG fighters on his record.

I mean if he is so good, why hasn't he fought a great fighter. Kessler is the best he's fought and Kessler is barely an above average boxer. I'm not saying that Calzaghe is bad, but one of the best p4p? I don't think he belongs in the top 10 even. If he gets into the ring with Hopkins, Pavlik, Taylor, or Wright and beats either one of them, than he belongs, otherwise, he is way too overrated.

He have not fight any household names but he have beat very serious opositon like eubank,Manfredo,Lacy and Kessler. And by the way his being calling out Roy Jones and Hopkis years ago, is not he's fault that they were doing what Floyd is doing with Cotto, ducking. Now since hopkins is about to retire, he is going for the bigger pay day, that is the only reason he will fight Calzaghe. i dont take anything away from Hopkins, because is tough to be 43 and still be a contender, but Calzaghe is far too good, too fast, too aggresive and too young for Hopkins.Sorry i like Hopkins but Calzaghe will beat him with ease!
He didn't win every fight in amateurs, by the way. His last loss was 1990, but it was extremely controversial, to the point where some of the judges were fired. Still, 18 years without losing a fight is extremely impressive.

Many people, more from the US, said Lacy and Manfredo were big up and comers, quite solid before they met Joe, and he stunned them and people into realising they're not on his level. It's only since people have dis credited Lacy and Manfredo, thus the recognistion for Joe of those wins.
Who was the 1990 fight against FRKO, got any info or links for it? Didn't know judges got fired over it, that's mad, wonder what his first loss before that was. Btw, check your inbox mate!!

So the theory is Calzaghe is over rated because he's undefeated and he.ll outbox Hopkins by a wide decision instead of knocking him out in the first round. Well based on this I guess Calzaghe is one of the best over rated fighters of his era, probally the best super middleweight ever will most likely retire undefeated. Yup sounds over rated to me too!!
