Mayweather: "Cotto Knows He Can't Beat Me"

He knows it deep inside his heart. This is what befuddles Floyd. This is what makes Floyd just a little bit reluctant to accept the challenge.
A fight vs. Cotto would be a risky journey into the unknown for Floyd who is used to controlling fight scenarios through his skillful handpicking.
Floyd tells us pressure pressure pressure is not the remedy to beat him. Yeah, right, like he is going to tell us what it is? and what it not is? Floyd is going to help his adversary?
Pressure is the way to defeat Floyd, and Cotto absolutely has the required assets to do it.
The fighter that ultimately beats mayweather (if it ever happens prior to him hanging up the gloves for good) will have to do more than pressure him. Pressure (by itself) is not the tactic that will remove floyd's 0. That fighter will have to not only be able to **** but also be able to defend & fight on the outside. More importantly, he's going to have to have an immense decisive physical advantage as well as above avg. punching power. Even then, those components won't guarantee a victory because mayweather might just be the smartest fighter in the game currently. It amuses me how many folks want to discredit mayweather's recent victory saying that hatton was too small but many so called experts were claiming this bout to be floyd's toughest since castillo I. He showed the complete arsenal last weekend & virtually put on a clinic. Inside fighting, body punching, defense, using the jab, using superior hand & foot speed, throwing combinations, lead rights & left hooks, ring generalship, stamina, remaining relaxed under pressure. All the components needed to be a great fighter. Say what you will..cotto is a good fighter but he does not have the tools to beat mayweather at this pt in mayweather's career. He's still very much in his prime (at age 30). He has never taken a beating, weight never fluctuates, works out year round, trains w/ intensity & still has the desire to be the best. Hell, even his hands held up cause Lord knows he laid enough leather on hatton during the fight. He pops a lotta **** but make no mistake..he pushes himself to the limit in order to be considered amongst boxing's all time greats.
Cotto showed improvement against mosely as far as displaying more than just a straightforward body assault. He even was able to beat shane to the punch & outbox him in spurts. That wont happen against mayweather who's better defensively & much more accurate w/ his punches than mosely at this pt in his career. Shane looked a bit slow that night & was missing wildly w/ his punches but was still very much in the fight throughout and had cotto retreating at certain stages. I think pressure fighters who cant outmuscle floyd play right into his hands because of his ability to counterpunch. There's no way cotto can outbox mayweather from the outside even if he chooses to box in certain stages; therefore, (much like hatton) his best option is to stay in close. He doesnt possess one punch k-o power and I dont think the bodypunching will be a big factor b/c mosely was able to outland cotto to the body. That being said, mayweather is an effective bodypuncher himself. If the public really demands this fight & the promoters are able to put the right figures up then Im sure it will happen. Like I said last week, mayweather is a bonafide star now in terms of generating wealth within the sport. Last week's fight did 850k ppv buys after doing about 2.4mil in his previous outing. The brother isnt fighting ANYONE (incl. somebody's grandmomz) for less than 20mil. So everybody can talk that he's ducking this fighter & that figter bs all they want..when in reality it's all about the dough. Uncle roger said it best "Floyd keeps fighting (even after acquiring great wealth) for the same reason bill gates is still in the computer game".. & donald trump is still buying properties. That's the american way...luckily floyd's skills talk as loudly as the money.Last edited by Hitman88; 12-17-2007, 03:56 PM.Comment

If last week's fight clears a million ppv buys, he'll be the first figther in the sport to have accomplished that feat back 2 back (not even de la hoya has done it). WBC welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25KOs) is not interested in a potential fight with WBA champ Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25KOs) of Puerto Rico, at least for now. In a recent interview with Franklin McNeil of the New Jersey Star-Ledger, Mayweather gave his thoughts on Cotto trying to lure him into a fight by revealing his strategy to win. Mayweather, as one can expect, does not agree with Cotto's fight plan. More important than that, he doesn't feel the fight makes any financial sense at the moment. [details]
from strictly a BUSINESS standpoint i can understand that; however soon enough (if cotto doesnt lose) mayweather has to fight him whether he beats bigger names or not...he IS the number 1 contender in the welterweight division and so far there arent too many REAL serious threats to cotto's throne...at least from fighters in that division with the exception of maybe a paul williams (who would be a handful for almost anyone at the moment)
I am kind of excited to see what mayweather promotions does though. hopefully they put together some good fights.
cotto v. mayweather should occur by the end of 08 or early-mid 09.
if i were miguel cotto (or his trainer/cornermen/promoter) i would take this time and use it to my advantage by taking on all the top contenders that everyone says mayweather should fight that way if he beats some of those guys there would be no question as to who mayweather should fight.
he wont have much choice.
it also helps cotto grow more as a fighter.
im glad there will be some time inbetween that way cotto can be twice as sharp and have an even better chance at a close fight.
maybe cotto v. de la hoya (to build his resume and make him even more of a top ppv money maker)
or
cotto v. williams. (to build his reputation as a force to be reckoned with)
something like that to help set the table for mayweather v. cotto.Comment
