My thoughts on Mayweather/Hatton (no floyd boasting or excuses for hatton)
First of all i'd like to say that for the first time in YEARS im actually happy with floyd's performance in the ring.
He fought a boxer's fight and at times actually engaged hatton.
He boxed well, used great defense, and used his jab very effectively.
I'm glad floyd actually stood up to someone in the ring for more than 10 seconds a round.
He fought a hell of a fight.
Hatton fought his heart out no doubt about it.
The fans of hatton shouldnt be ashamed or unhappy with his efforts.
Hatton stood as tall as his 5'6 1/2 inch would allow and he tried to stand even taller than that. he did exactly what i expected as far as him brawling was conerned.
He didnt show the explosive speed that i expected but he definately gave his best and fell short.
he even got mayweather off balance early in the fight and looked pretty good.
Both fighters gave clearly 110% and showed lots of heart.
As i had expected floyd won the fight. i did not expect floyd to win by KO or TKO. that was a surprise. i also didnt think floyd could generate enough power for a knockdown and he did...twice...and then came the stoppage.
the stoppage may have been a LITTLE early due to the fact that hatton still looked game even after the second knockdown. it just looked to me in his eyes that he would make all the effort he could generate to get up again but thats just the fighter hatton is...one thats all heart and im sure he'll be back doing great things...his first loss is to mayweather and thats not by any means a knock about his abilities.
Floyd's stoppage of hatton was impressive but a tad bit of a heartwrenching moment for me because a fighter's heart is the most important quality to me (thats why im such a fan of Diego Corrales...RIP) and to see him lose (by a stoppage at that) was tough.
Floyd has looked the best he has been in years and hopefully this is a sign of things to come...maybe a change in mayweather's game...if he continues to fight as a BOXER/PUNCHER instead of a defensive minded boxer he will make for some great fights with the rest of the top fighters around including a very game miguel cotto, a tall/lanky paul williams, not to mention many others.
I highly doubt mayweather will take 2 years away from the sport...a year i could see likely (since he takes 6 months off roughly at a time inbetween fights) but i cant see him walking away for 2 years...
personally i dont think he should take anytime off...he's currently in his prime and a layoff might ruin him.
i was also pleased to see appreciation both fighters had for each other after the fight. floyd seemed very humble (compared to how he usually is) and seemed to show more appreciation for hatton than he did for de la hoya...
he also went on to say that hatton is a great champion and that he'd like to see him fight again...i never heard mayweather say so many kind things about another fighter in consecutive sentances...
is he becoming more humble and not overplaying his ****yness anymore? if he indeed is then he will win the fans over.
I do have a complaint with the judges scorecards...while i had floyd ahead at the time of the stoppage i didnt have hatton winning only one round as two of the three judges had it scored.
lets be realistic...floyd was definatly ahead but not by that many rounds.
i had floyd ahead by 3 rounds at the time of the stoppage...so ricky needed a knockout by my cards or at least a couple knockdowns...
floyd did cotto a favor with this fight by showing him another depth to mayweather and something to look at closely WHEN they indeed fight...they will...cotto is number 1 contender in the division.
hatton's lack of size definately showed and while neither fighter is a natural welterweight hatton's small frame showed more in the fight...his speed and height werent that off from mayweather but the arm length is what ruined the fight for him...it didnt give him any chance other than to fight inside and he tried.
cong**** to mayweather for a great performance (something that has been lacking from his game for a couple years) and for showing kindness and being a good sport when he won. and for closing the show (something a champion should do)
cong**** to hatton for showing his heart and fighting tall like a champion. hope to see him back at 140 again...gives paulie malignaggi a stiff competition (without hatton i say paulie would unify the titles at 140)
