MMA may look like a street fight to the untrained eye, but in reality, without extensive grappling/submissions training you'll be tapped out in under 30 seconds. And even if your a great grappler, you have to know how to throw some hands, defend/throw kicks, take a punch, etc. so its really not nearly as easy as it looks.

Again, the sport is still developing and growing, sure there's ample opportunities to get involved these days if one trains hard enough and has the right temprament and athletic abilities, but that is changing and the sport is continuing to evolve. I think the next generation of fighters will show some amazing talent, as many of the top fighters of today entered the sport midcareer.. for instance, you have great wrestlers, great judo fighters, great jujitsu fighters, etc. who've just started to learn striking within the last 5-10 years, and great strikers who are only now turning into good grapplers. I look at MMA as a distinct fighting style, not like the name (mixed martial arts) suggests at all.. sure it is a hybrid of various fighting styles now, but the rules and competition format are quite unique. Really, its not a question of the evolution of martial arts as some people say, its really the emergence of a new style of fighting.

MMA is not just fade, but i agree with Jeff that MM will never be as big as boxing and its primitive.
I agree with Jeff also. Boxing is picking up steam compared to a few years ago in terms of interest and big fights. I don't know about Kimbo. I've seen a few of his fights and not impressed. Gary Shaw is hyping him up just like he did Lacy by saying **** like he could become Heavyweight Boxing Champ I seen Kimbo get his ass kicked by some big redneck on youtube imagine what Klitschko would do to him.

I use to be really into mma...and I still am somewhat. There are just a few things about it that I can't relate to and I can't get into it as much as boxing.

            1) In boxing...ussually the tougher guys are born in ****...and thats what people like about them. They are working class heroes. People like the idea of a really tough guy coming from a ****ty area going on to become a great champion. All these guys in mma are from some small hick towns. Something about that bothers me...I just don't feel that they portray the spirit of a tough hard fighter like boxers do....they are just middle class hicks who are good at grappling.

            2) I hate how alot of the fighters in mma are credited as being "great" stand up fighters. I have yet to see one fighter display a real great amount of boxing skill.

            3) People into mma like to think that mma is the "real deal" and that they are tougher better fighters than boxers. This is just bull****....seriously...I think Tyson as out of his prime as he is now..could sign with UFC and ruin some of their fighters.

I like to look at it this way when people compare the two. An mma fighter would have no chance against a boxer via boxing rules...however a boxer still would have a chance against an mma fighter via mma rules because there is a chance of knockout in both instances. Plus the UFC fanbase really sucks...its alot of younger people who think "boxing is boring" and like I said before feel as though ufc is "the real deal".

the only notable middle-class hick in the whole MMA universe is Matt Hughes...one guy! how does this make them all middle-class hicks?

I agree with your second point but Mike Tyson? he doesn't even have the desire or skills to compete in the sport that made him famous!

Dude....look at every town that these kids are from on like the ultimate fighter...They are all the weirdest people ever. It just bothers me. I like normal hard tough fighters...not black dudes with bleached mohawks that talk with a lisp.

Get over it you hardcore boxing fans(i am a hardcore boxing fan as well),

but MMA has seriously taken over boxing as the premiere combat sport. In my city alone, I can name between 5-7 MMA gyms. There's only one gym that teaches boxing only and it's in a poor area, so you know it's only a matter of time before that boxing gym folds up just like the rest of 'em did through the decades. I used to work with a guy who was a pro club-fighter during the 80's, he would mention all these boxing gyms that used to be in my city, none of 'em exists now.

A few local bars used to carry PPV boxing bouts, today, you'd be lucky if there was one bar that carried a DLH PPV! But on any given Saturday night that the UFC is holding a PPV, you bet there's about 10 bars that shows it and all of 'em are a packed house!

And no, i'm not from some hick-town, I live in Southern California, home of Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, and a large latino population. And all I hear are the names Lidell, Rampage, Fedor, etc...

MMA is here to stay and I'm a fan of it, I could careless about the UFC's WWE type like feel. but it's a legitimate sport, its fighters suffer the same cuts, bruises, ko's that boxing does.

Come to think about it. MMA has given new jobs to boxing coaches who would've only been coaching boxers. Top MMA fighters seek out boxing coaches all over America.

well, it's no different than the black guy who has a tattoo on his face w/ the world-famous lisp, i believe he holds the record for being the youngest heavyweight to win a world title!

How about that boxer who wears a pink wig, fishnet stockings, and blood red lipstick with red pumps to match and a f**kin' g-string. Now that's weird!!
