but MMA has seriously taken over boxing as the premiere combat sport. In my city alone, I can name between 5-7 MMA gyms. There's only one gym that teaches boxing only and it's in a poor area, so you know it's only a matter of time before that boxing gym folds up just like the rest of 'em did through the decades. I used to work with a guy who was a pro club-fighter during the 80's, he would mention all these boxing gyms that used to be in my city, none of 'em exists now.

A few local bars used to carry PPV boxing bouts, today, you'd be lucky if there was one bar that carried a DLH PPV! But on any given Saturday night that the UFC is holding a PPV, you bet there's about 10 bars that shows it and all of 'em are a packed house!

And no, i'm not from some hick-town, I live in Southern California, home of Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, and a large latino population. And all I hear are the names Lidell, Rampage, Fedor, etc...

MMA is here to stay and I'm a fan of it, I could careless about the UFC's WWE type like feel. but it's a legitimate sport, its fighters suffer the same cuts, bruises, ko's that boxing does.

Come to think about it. MMA has given new jobs to boxing coaches who would've only been coaching boxers. Top MMA fighters seek out boxing coaches all over America.
Not only has MMA taken over our television sets, and our communities with all the McMMA gyms, but it has also taken over the bookstores. I was just at a bookstore last night and there was about 5 different brands of MMA magazines, two weight-lifting magazines had an MMA fighter on its cover, not a single boxing magazine, that tells you right there which sport is more popular.

And plus, how can anyone say MMA is a fad when it combines wrestling which can be traced back to Greece thousands of years ago, Boxing can also be traced back to Greece, Muay Thai has also been around for a very long time.

because MMA fighters dont have that much pull in their negotiation salaries, MMA fighters make only a fraction of what most top 130lbers make, which is hilarious when you think about it. These guys pull in major PPV numbers, yet their only making a few hundred thousand or a million thats why. Boxers having been ****ed over most of their existence, attempt to have major pull in financial negotiations, which is why you see them getting ppv revenues/gate etc. When MMA fighters, paritcularly UFC get tired of seeing guys like mayweather, dlh, pacman pull in millions in a sport that supposedly dead, while their "new standard in combat sports" is pulling in millions and they aint even getting a small fraction of what it pulls in, thats when youre gonna see MMA become more like boxing with more organizations, more belts, and generally more sanctions.

MMA hasnt taken over as the number 1 combat sport, maybe in your city, but in the big scheme of things your city means nothing. Boxing is doing great around the world, its also having a great year ppv wise and at the box office.

Calz Vs Kessler sold 50,000 one week in Wales, Very next week Cotto Vs Mosley sold like 17,000 in MSG, lets not get carried away.

the top-elite fighters may make more in boxing, because not everything is in-house like it's in the UFC. But the UFC is by far bigger when you compare it to GBP, DKP, Top rank maybe not a combination of the three vs. UFC but take each one of 'em compared to the UFC . Its like David vs. Goliath, my man.

The UFC refuses to disclose its fighters fight purse because there would be alot of bickering , look at happened to Randy Couture. but as a company, the UFC runs the MMA world like a monopoly!

2007 seemed to belong to Boxing as far as revenue and popularity. there was something like a buzz in the air every month which seemed to dwarf MMA events. will 2008 be the same as well?
