      to threadstarter:

      he got knocked out...

the ropes and the corner were the only thing holding him up.

without that he would have hit the ground no doubt...

he wouldnt have taken as much of the punishment if he wasnt held up by the ropes and the fight would have continued had this happen like it happened to pavlik in the center of the ring.

when you have a guy only being held up by ropes and his pride is the only thing holding him up and he keeps getting hit repeatedly you HAVE to stop the fight before the guy gets serious injuries...

it was the right decision (same thing happened with pavlik/miranda) and im not mad about that at all or think it was unfair...

im a taylor fan but i can admit my guy lost...

if this took place in the center of the ring and taylor did indeed go down who knows what would happen but thats a lot of what ifs and you cant look at it like that...

even if taylor was given an oppertunity to get up he might not have and if he did he could have still be knocked out...

      they were brutal clean shots...

      he lost.

and yes for all the taylor haters; it was hard to see that...especially in that fashion of 7-8 punches unanswered

This is really like arguing the Disobleys Hurtado deserved a count after taking 12 left hands from Whitaker, and falling through the ropes.

Taylor was out COLD. if you cant see this, something is wrong with you.

He got put out cold by a left hook, his hands dropped to his side, and he slumped over. Pavlik kept hammering away, and Steve Smoger stepped in, and Taylor fell to the ground. OUT COLD.

If that would have taking place in the center of the ring, Taylor would have fallen face down. Fighters don't get up from falling face down.

If taylor would have gotten to his feet he would have been seriuosly hurt. The ref stopped the fight at the perfect time. Taylor looked like he didnt have any life in him.

              probably not

              Probably not.

Smoger stepped in between the fighters right as Jermain fell down, which makes absolutly ZERO sense.
My thought is that the kid fought his ass off and deserved the oppourtounity to get up and fight back. Chances are he would have gotten stopped, chances are he wouldnt have won, but being the middleweight champ of the world, Taylor deserves the benefit of the doubt.

              Thoughts?????

some of you guys are nuts. If you watch the stoppage, as Smoger is jumping in to stop the fight, Kelly lands another left hand against a defenseless Taylor. in other words, if Smoger hadnt stepped in, Pavlik would have continued to tee off on Taylor as he was hung up on the ropes. and Pavlik was too close for Taylor to fall down anyway, he would have been hung up on him and probebly have eaten more uppercuts.

If there is no standing 8 count rule, then the right thing to do is to stop the fight when a fighter is taking bad amounts of damage and cannot stop taking punishment.
and a ref should not call a knockdown unless the fighter actually touches the ground. this was the only thing to do, there was in no way a bad stoppage. And I thoguht Pavlik was VERY close to being stopped in the 2nd.

@ first i thought twas a bit premature but then i watched rd 7 again n again and decided that it was indeed necessary to stop the fight. first off if it wasn't for the ropes taylor would have been down right after the first uppercut and would given a normal count or standing 8 count if he manages to stay up. but since he was standing still because of the rope pavlick inflicted more damage on him w/c was for me was too much to take. those were a lot more unanswered power shots given to him and that was too dangerous imo. he was out cold there sitting right after w/ no sign of getting up or protest. stopping the fight with alot of answered power shot was enough to stop the fight.

                    i agree with you...

                    and that reminds me...

that is true; if there was another ref doing the fight it may have been stopped in the second after the pavlik knockdown where he was VERY whobblely and eating punches looking damn near out...

im glad it wasnt stopped though...sometimes its a good thing to let good fighters fight...

and these are two great fighters...

premature stoppage? Wow, guess you would've thought it'd been a good stoppage after Pavlik beats Taylor into a coma.
