Dios, I know what are you saying but Cotto or rather top ranks has done an amazing job with seliing out the MSG. I believe Cotto could pack the Yankees Stadium as well. In the beginning of boxing ver late 1890's and early 1900 most of the boxing was held in stadium with up to 100,000 people. I believe Jesse Willard and JAck Dampsey had 120,000 spectators, which is insane. I think as a promoter you would make more money by promoting your own venue rather to leaving it to the casinos to deal with. Bov Arum's been saying lately that Casinos are for toursit and the boxing demographic is not as good. Besides, he's doing better financially by promoting his own boxing venue. I don't remember seeing a packed casino when I watched Cotto fight in one. Boxing needs to go to the big metropolises, big cities. Chicago, LA, New York, Boston, and on consistent basis. I am from Toronto and there is nothing here, nothing. Montreal on the other hand are doing an amazing job with promoting their fighters to the boxing fans in the city.Comment

Last year, they sold 13,000 seats for Cotto-Malignaggi. They just worked VERY hard to get that sell-out for Cotto-Judah. And both Paulie and Zab are from New York City.
AND PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT COTTO HAS MAINLY FOUGHT DURING THE PUERTO RICAN PARADE WEEKEND.... so that boosts the ticket sales. You take Cotto outside of NYC and San Juan and he won't sell.
Regarding the casinos, the reason they go to the casinos is because the casinos pay the promoter a multi-million dollar "site fee". For example, casinos have paid up to $10 million to secure an Oscar Delahoya fight. That becomes guaranteed revenue for the promoter. It is MUCH lower risk than trying to sell tickets. Besides, selling 10,000 tickets at an average price of $100 only equals an additional $1 million in revenues. You can make that million bucks by just selling 20K extra PPV's. And you have no security problems, etc, etc.
See how the big arena fights don't make sense? If there was a way for the promoter to just have two guys fight in a room and to not deal with all the tickets and gate and security and Fan Man and Bowe/Golota riots, they would. They would MUCH rather sell a ****load of PPV's. The best thing about the live gate is thet all the celebrities and the environment and atmosphere helps sell FUTURE fights. It's marketing.
The casino is willing to pay the big site fee because they sell rooms, meals, etc...but most importantly, they bring people into the casinos. They have tripled the table minimums and the sports book is humming.Comment

No... I meant LITERALLY TV commercials. American sports is structured for TV consumption. That is why you see so many breaks in the action. Euro/Latino sports are set up differently where a major corporate sponsor may get jersey rights or something like that.
A 30 second spot during the SuperBowl sells for $2 million.Comment

Your logic is flawed. Cotto wasn't a big star until he fought Judah. Malignaggi has never been a star. A never was. THat is why the fight wasn't a huge commodity.
Hatton - 25,000 are wanting to travel abroad to watch him fight.
Mayweather - big star.
How doesn't that make sense?????Comment
