You're kind of right, but there's more than just race.

Sometimes it's nationality, regional pride, etc. Fans relate to fighters for a vareity of reasons

My favorite fighter is Wlad, but not simply because he's white, though I'll admit that helps. Wlad is probably the most educated, articulate, and cosmopolitan champion that boxing has had, which is what appeals to me; he's also secular and a philanthropist. I look at Wlad and say 'he's one of us', but 'us' isn't primarily racial.
