willie pep has won 230 fights, yet only 2 of his opponents are in the ring magazine top 80 of the last 80 years.

The people hugging Mayweather's nuts often have little historical perspective. They are usually the same people who actually think Evander Holyfield was the heavyweight champion of the world 4-5 times or whatever the newest number is (maybe Oquendo had been given some kind of belt for coming out of retirement which would bump it up one ).

Mayweather is the best fighter today. Period. That's it though. I don't see how he's any better than Roy Jones Jr., Pernell Whitaker, Cesar Chavez, Bernard Hopkins, or even James Toney. I certainly don't think he's better than Ray Leonard or Roberto Duran. I've only gone back 30 years or so and I've already named some guys who I think were better or at least equal pound for pound fighters. He'll need many more victories to prove himself above these guys, and that's just the begining. There are so many greats, SO MANY, in the history of gloved fighting, that to announce Mayweather as anything better than the best of his time, currently, is such a profoundly shortsighted and irritating statement that I have to respond with anger, as a fan of boxing and a student of it's history.

I don't hate Mayweather, but I don't think he's all that great. Best fighter today? Okay, fine but Pacquaio is catching up to even that claim. But ever? Come on, put down the pipe, the dust, the bottle, or whatever the hell you're on. He's done very well so far, and is on the path to greatness, but he's not even close yet. Not even close.
I would agree that Mayweather's resume is nowhere near as good as Peps(& honestly, how could it be?) but you seem to be taking away from PBF accomplishments he is undefeated & has held titles in in several weight classes, wether you liked the oppostion or not it doesn't change that fact & he'll probably be remembered in boxing history although nowhere near the status of Pep or even DLH(especially if he retires after the DLH fight). I think you missed the point tho, I don't think the thread starter was comparing Pep & Mayweather in any way other then the fact that they are 2 incredibly skilled defensive fighters & Mayweather is hated on for not being a knockout artist & Pep is remember for his artful & skilled style, I honestly think Floyd style is something beautiful to watch, but hey I'm a lover of the sweet science.

Pep fought the best and didnt talk about retiring all the time. He made sure he fought the best to get a legacy. I bet his mouth wasnt as dirty as Mayweathers as well.

Mayweather throws 35 punches a round.

                  End of thread.

You mistake "Legacy" for money. Fighters needed to fight more because there wasn't as much money as there is today. You needed to fight a popular guy because "that is where the money is at"

Robinson, Pep, and the rest, if fighting today, making millions, would have around the same amount of fights the rest of the Elites have today.

Floyd is also 30, it's a good time to retire before the body slows down.
