It takes a boxing fan to embrace Holmes; the general populace was not going to gel to him.
No good looks, no joyful personality (Neon Leon); they say Don King use to berate him for his appearance in the ring.

As mentioned, though the same birth year, when active Lar was never remotely near the same hiearchy as Big George, the reason poor Lar has projected a lifetime of insecurity on to Big George, blaming him for halitosis, piles, impotency, and bad hair.
