for the John L. Sullivan Trophy!

    between

    Joe Louis
    Eastern Conference Champion

    versus

    Muhammad Ali
    Western Conference Champion

Louis has his hands full tonight. He is down one game and he wants to even the series. As I said before in the last fight, Louis, as well as Ali are excellent in rematches. Can Louis keep his rematch string perfect tonight? Louis weighed in at 204, one pound lighter than in fight #1. Ali was 211¾lbs., still in great shape. Both men have learned something from the last fight. Here is something that went on during the press conference.

Ali: I have a present for Joe. Here it is. A book. The title is "Uncle Tom's Cabin"!

    (crowd laughs)

Louis just doesn't say anything, but is a very serious man.

Well, there you have it folks. Looks like these two are ready. Here is the tale of the tape.

    Joe Louis

    age: 28
    height: 6'-2"
    weight: 204
    reach: 76"
    record: 56-1-0 (50ko)

    Muhammad Ali

    age: 25
    height: 6'-3"
    weight: 211¾
    reach: 83"
    record: 29-0-0 (23ko)

The crowd cheers as Muhammad Ali bounces up and down through the aisle. Ali is attired with a white robe with his name stiched in red lettering. He is in the ring and warms up.

The crowd now roars for Joe Louis entrance, as he comes into the ring, wearing a blue robe with his name stiched in white lettering. He now comes in the ring and has a determined look on his face.

    Here is our ring announcer!

Michael Buffer: Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the Playoff Boxing Finals! This is to see who is the greatest heavyweight of all-time! Once and for all, llllets get readyyy to rummmblllllllle! Fifteen rounds! Introducing, from Houston, Texas, wearing white trunks with red stripes, standing six feet three inches tall, weighing two hundred eleven and three quarter pounds, nicknamed, "The Greatest", The Western Conference Champion, Muhammad Aliiii!(the crowd cheers with excitement)Aliiiiii! And his opponent,(the crowd roars now) from right here in Detroit, Michigan, wearing blue trunks with white stripes, standing six feet two inches tall and weighing two hundred four pounds, nicknamed "The Brown Bomber", The Eastern Conference Champioooooooon, your Joe Looouiiisss!(the crowd is estatic)Looouiiissss!

Mark Conn: You know the rules of the Michigan State Athletic Boxing Commision. Protect yourself at all times, and break when I tell you to break. Any questions? Shake hands and come out fighting.

Since we all know Louis' history in rematches, the odds are still at 1 to 1.

Round 1: Louis is stalking Ali. Ali does his same routine of dancing and prancing and shoving that left hand in Louis' eye. Ali jabs and moves and gets in a fast straight right, now and then. Louis just waits and jabs ali when he gets the chance. Louis is bending his knees a bit, and his legs a bit wider than the last time, unusual for louis to do. Louis gets in a left hook and a right cross to ali's midsection and a left to the chin. ALi ties louis up and dances away and fires rapid-fire combinations: Both men are a little more relaxed as Blackburn and Dundee encourage the two.

Round 2: Louis is bending as he shoots a left jab to the chin and a fast left hook, but misses. Ali fires a left jab and a right hand and ties up Louis. Louis gets ali on the ropes an rips the body. Ali pushes him off, but louis comes back with some body shots before ali ties joe up. muhammad, is still on his toes popping the left jab. ali shoots a left hook and a right uppercut as louis comes in, but louis blocks it and shoots a good right hand: Louis looks ready, and dundee is giving ali advice.

Round 3: Ali is still on his toes, moving and grooving, and louis just waits for the right moment. Louis crowds ali against the ropes and rips the body and jaw. Ali fires back but to no avail as louis is finding his target with left hooks. ali shoves louis away, and jabs, but louis is right on him: Ali is a bit tired, but louis is fresh.

Round 4: Ali is flatfooted, and one-two's louis. Louis fires a jab that is short of the mark, but ali counters with a double right that rocks louis' head. ali follows up, but louis ties ali up and recovers. ali is on the defensive, throwing jabs, and a good left hook now and then. Louis concentrates on body punching to wear Muhammad down. Louis is finding the target more in this fight than the last one. Louis uppercuts ali and ali is hurt, however ali manages to tie louis up and survive the round: dundee is working ali over to get him fresh.

Round 5: Ali is back on his toes, but the bounce is not the same. Louis bullies him again, and ali is against the ropes. A quick one-two-three lands and ali is hurt. Louis hits a right to ali's jaw, and two left jabs to the chin. Louis with the old one-two! Louis is pouring it on in this round, and ali is defense less and he covers up against the ropes. ali jabs a bit, but louis blocks them and counters with a left hook to the body and a right cross to the chin. Louis is moving in fast landing terrific blows, but ali is still standing. Louis lands another right hand. He's landed more blows in this one round, than he has in any five rounds in the other fight. Ali cannot defend himself as the bell sounds!: Dundee is using an endswell to lower the swelling on Ali's jaw and smeling salts to revive him as well.

Round 6: Louis is moving in. ali is on his toes, but still not with the same speed as in the first round. Louis easily gets to him and gets ina tremendous flurry. a left hook sends ali reeling against the ropes, and Louis drives a left to the chin, a right to te stomach, a right to the head, another right to the head. And ali was going down, but he held on to the ropes as Louis moves in with a crushing right hand, and Ali is down! Ali is down! Ali is up at two. Louis moves a right to the head, and a left to the body sends ali down again, and Conn is watching carefully. A left jab to the face, a right to the body, a left to the face, a right to the chin, and ALi is down again! The count is up to 5... 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and ali is up, but still wobbly and Referee Mark Conn stops it. The fight is over, on a technical knockout. Muhammad Ali is beaten in six rounds!

Michael Buffer: The winner by tko at 1:27 seconds of the sixth round, Joooooooeeeeee Looouiiiiissssssssssss!(the crowd is in bedlam)

Louis helps Ali to his corner, and consoles Dundee. Louis makes good in the rematch, as he always does. Let's go to the post fight press conferences.

    • Joe Louis Post-Fight Press Conference

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter1: How hard is it to knock this guy out?

Louis: Plenty hard. It's like trying to take a brick out of a wall.

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter2: You fought a different fight this time, didn't you?

Louis: Yes, I fought more like a crowding fighter this time.

      (Loud Shouting)
      Reporter3: What was your plan?

Louis: Well, Chappy told me to go on out and get him, so that's what I did, to go on out and get him.

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter4: When did you feel you had him?

Louis: In the fourth round, when he was slower, I knew it was just a matter of time.

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter5: Will you continue to use this style against ali?

Louis: If it would work everytime, then yeah.

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter6: Did he give you any trouble at all, this time?

Louis: Yes, he still moved a lot in the beginning, and he tagged me a few times, but I kept going after him, and fortunately, I still came out the winner.

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter7: Is the confidence level higher now, Joe?

      Louis: I would say so.

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter8: What was your reaction to the book that Ali gave you?

Louis: I thought he was a bafoon!

      (Laughter)

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter9: Will you change anything for the naxt match?

Louis: Maybe a couple of things, but not much.

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter10: Do you feel you can handle going into Houston, Ali's terf?

Louis: I've been booed before, so I think I can handle it.

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter11: Were you hurt at any time?

Louis: In the fourth, a little.

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter12: Do you think that your performance has sent a message to Ali and his people?

Louis: I think so. He knows what he's really up against and he'll take me serious from now on.

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter13: Does Ali's antics affect you in any way?

Louis: Did it look like it did tonight?

      Reporter13: Not really.

      Louis: Well, there's your answer.

      (Loud Shouting)
Reporter14: Do you feel your left hook helped you in this fight?

Louis: Yeah, well I tagged him with it a few times and it kind of worn him down, so I would say so.

      (Soft Bickering)
Reporter15: Was there any opponent you faced in you career that was harder than Ali?

      Louis: Yeah, Rocky Marciano.

      (Soft Bickering)
Reporter16: Was Muhammad's jab still a problem for you?

Louis: Yes, but I was able to overcome it.

      (Soft Bickering)
Reporter17: Can you win four straight on this guy?

Louis: Can't say for sure, but I'll try.

      (Soft Bickering)
Reporter18: Do you think there is any way Ali can still beat you?

Louis: I think I've found a way to catch up to him, as long as I got fifteen rounds to work with.

Reporter19: What about Ali's right hand? Was it any trouble?

Louis: It wasn't too much trouble. It wasn't that hard, just sort of annoying everytime I walk into it.

Reporter20: So, have you adopted the style of a pressure fighter for the rest of this series?

Louis: If it'll work, then I suppose so.

      Jack Blackburn: No more questions!

      • Muhammad Ali Post-Fight Press Conference

        (Loud Shouting)
Reporter1: What is going through your mind right now?

Ali: I'm a little suprised, but I'll get over it.

        (Loud Shouting)
Reporter2: What was your undoing this time?

Ali: Maybe I felt a little too comfortable. I didn't use my jab as often as I should. Other that tat I don't have a clue. I guess he figured me out.

        (Loud Shouting)
Reporter3: What will you change in your style for the next fight?

Ali: I'm not sure. I'll have to work on that with Angelo a bit. I got a lot of work to do in order for me to beat this guy.

        (Loud Shouting)
Reporter4: Did the left hook bother you much?

Ali: Yes it did. He got a few on me in the third and fourth round. When he got me on the ropes he got a few left hooks to my stomach, and that kind of slowed me down.

        (Loud Shouting)
Reporter5: Do you think going to the Astrodome will help you somewhat?

Ali: I hope so. I need all the help and encouragement I can get to beat this guy.

        (Laughter)

        (Loud Shouting)
Reporter6: Do you feel that you didn't train hard enough for this fight?

Ali: Well, maybe I could have been in better condition, but I still trained pretty hard. I'll just have to change some things and adjust my strategy.

        (Loud Shouting)
Reporter7: Is that swollen jaw serious?

Ali: Not really. I'll just put some ice on it and let it heal, that's all.

        (Soft Bickering)
Reporter8: Do you think the mind games are working?

Ali: If it's not now, it will sooner or later, I hope.

Reporter9: Will you come back and win the next fight?

        Ali: I'll sure try.

                • I think Butterfly just gets tired after doing 5 or so rounds and just decides that someone is going to get knocked out.
