Anyways, Johnson was just masterful at keeping opponents on the outside. And when they tried to get inside, he would just turn them and punish them. Johnson also looked really good when he would just paw out the jab, and stop a guy right in his tracks trying to get in. For all its worth, Dempsey's 'bobbing and weaving' is really overated. I see it as mostly wasted energy. He did have a good right hand though. It was really sneaky, especially when he looped it. It was his best punch IMO but I don't think it would fool Johnson.
and yes Johnson's legacy was blown out of proportion, he has the most padded record ever. thing is most of his publicity is because he was a black fighter beating up white fighters who were "bums" or "tomato cans" or w.e you want to call them. These White fighters were considered to be superior to black fighters but lets face it just because your white doesn't make you a better person/fighter. Johnson beat up some of these fighters and people said my God he must be like a superman to be an inferior black guy (though they didn't say black guy) beating up white guys. So they needed a white guy to "put him back in his place" so they got the "white hope" old, fat, over the hill, way past his prime james j. jefferies to fight Johnson and what a surprise Johnson beat him (though I have to say Its pretty wierd that Johnson took 15 rounds to put down such bad Jefferies if thats any proof).
The fact is Johnson was a decent fighter, he had speed, and he turned his punches well, and he put all his weight behinds his punches. He also had a formidable defence, but the fact is he wasn't a great, he was decent/good fighter.

Originally posted by YogiRock, I have some Dempsey fights on my computer that I'd be happy to pass along to you if you want...I think I have his fights with Willard, Carpentier, Tunney (both), Gibbons, Firpo on this thing...In fact I think the only two fights that I don't have of his on here in the one with Brennan (have it on tape) and the one with Sharkey (don't have it at all, with the exception of a small highlight on tape).

Originally posted by YogiYeah, I hate the heat myself...It's about 20 degrees celsius outside right now and that's about perfect for me. But we had a hot spell a few weeks ago where it got up into the mid 30's, and we're going to get that again before too long...We get really hot summers up here, but I can't complain too much because this part of Canada is easily the warmest part of the country (rarely gets below 0 degrees celsius in the winter, and we get very little snow...if it does snow it usually melts within a couple of days, unless it's up in the mountains).
0 Degrees Celcius = 32 degrees Farenheit (freezing point)
100 Degrees Celcius = 212 degrees Farenhet (boiling point)

Yogi, would it be possible for you to upload the Dempsey Willard fight for me? My original copy was destroyed by my VCR - I swear those things have been programmed to blow up to force you to convert to DVD.
Anyway, I'd be very grateful if you could and I'd even fly to Canada and present you with a large sum of cash for troubles!

Originally posted by Smokin'And that Dempsey KO Johnson in 4 rounds I laughed out loud at. Dempsey (the master of feints) would easily get outfeinted in this one. He would get outclassed easily. But then again, it's butterfly's opinion (albeit a crap one), so I shouldn't diss it.
I'm going to go with Smokin' on this one. My main issue is with Demsey ten counting Johnson with only one knockdown. In Dempsey's 8 title fights he scored 21 knockdowns with only 4 of those knockdowns being for the ten count.
Remember that Dempsey was wearing 5 oz horse hair gloves (harder) and with no neutral corner or mandatory 8 count rule for that matter was able to literally stand over his opponent after these knockdowns and hammer him back to the canvas. Even still his opponents were able to get up 17 times and continue.
If these mythical fights are being conducted under today's rules with 10 oz foam gloves I would hesitate to say Dempsey would KO Johnson with one shot, without at the very least having Johnson badly hurt or worn down. I definitely don't see Dempsey scoring a clean knockout of Johnson while he is still fresh and defensively sharp.
