He was a good fighter, and would be a tough match-up for most LHWs in history... but his resume isn't even top 20-worthy. He held the Title hostage in Europe for over half a decade, and his best win is over a past-it Virgil Hill.Comment

Apologies, no disrespect intended, just opening up debate. Carpentier simply never proved he was on that type of level, I believe Charles, Moore, Tunney, Spinks, Conn, Foster, Bivins, Johnson, Rosenbloom, Lewis, Greb, Maxim, Jones should all be ranked far ahead of him, I'd rank a Qawi or Saad Muhammad over him without much problem. Here's the thing, while Carpentier was a good fighter, I believe he gets generally overrated simply for his celebrity from the Dempsey fight (not saying that anyone overrating him is using that performance as proof lol). If you actually take a look at his resume at 175, it's relatively thin compared with the best at the weight, outside of beating Jeff Smith and Battling Levinsky (obviously a very good win), he didnt beat anyone decent, well I guess you might give him credit for outboxing a heaviyweight in Gunboat Smith for 6 rounds (although its thought that the DQ against Smith was very unfair and some argue Carpentier should have been DQ'ed) Another thing, I tend not to put too much emphasis on losses in that sort of era but I find the Siki loss pretty detrimental to Carpentiers standing.Comment

Hell, Jones isn't making many of these top 5 lists. He doesn't deserve it on resume......but head to head?Comment

RJJ is a top 15 light-heavyweight.
In terms of light-heavyweight resume I would rank him below Charles, Moore, Tunney, Spinks, Rosenbloom, Harold Johnson, Greb, Bob Foster, Loughran, Bivins and Conn. And Langford if you did consider him a light-heavy.Comment

Is Foster's light heavy resume really better than Jones'?Comment
