I think Naz coulda beaten Barrera had he taken him more seriously. Marco outpointed him but it wasn't quite a shut-out. The Prince should have rebounded as Barerra did when Junior Jones twice defeated him. IMO There was really no reason for Hamed to retire because of that one loss.

Hamed made a lot of money and realized that no longer had the desire to make the sacrifice needed to fight at the highest level. That's an excellent reason to retire.

He didn't retire because of that one loss.

He retired because he quite simply lost the love for Boxing. He made too much money, which is still evident today with him living the high life in Dubai.

He lost the love for Boxing before the Barrera fight, and he paid for it inside the ring against him. You can't be anything less than 100% against someone like Barrera and then expect to beat him.

I think the things Hamed did that worked against lesser foes were never going to work against Barrera, no matter what shape Naz was in or at what point he was in his career.

He simply wasn't as good as people thought.

^ So he wasn't capable of edging like 3 more rounds on his best night?

Don't know....but it didn't look he would have considering how ridiculous he looked in there against Barrera. Appeared to me like his hands down, leaping-in-from-down-below style was tailor made for Barrera's talented left hand.

If you watch the documentary i posted called ''little prince - big fight'' you can quite clearly see he was no where near dedicated for that fight as he should have been.

Absolutely no shame whatsoever in losing to a ATG like Barrera and Barrera may well have beaten Hamed at his best, however the fact remains that for his career defining fight, Hamed was nowhere near dedicated enough as he should have been in training camp.
Scott’s point is still relevant, it seems to me. How would the fact that he didn’t come in shape for that defining fight (and I can’t think of this one fight “making” Hamed) make him an “underachiever”? He’s amongst the best featherweights ever; obviously not in the top 5, but still! I agree that he doesn’t belong the least bit in this thread. Maybe Hamed could indeed have been even better had he been more serious, but I think his achievments were nontheless spectacular...

Yes. It didn't appear to be a lack of conditioning nearly as much as it was having inferior technique to Barrera.
