Dempsey vs. Marciano

I see the ongoing myth being perpetuated about Dempsey is alive and kicking with some of the revisionists here.
Watch whatever footage you can find on Wills, McVey and Jeanette and you'll see they were slow fighters with nothing very special about them. These would have been easy wins for Dempsey. In fact, Dempsey had a contract to fight Wills but the money never came through. He wasn't going to fight him for free.
If we are going to talk about a fighter who drew the color line, then we can't have this conversation without Jack Johnson. A guy who refused to give Langford a rematch or a shot at his title when he was champion. He also refused to give McVey, Jeanette, Wills or any other black fighter a shot at his title. Jeanette first fought Johnson in only his 4th pro fight while Johnson was a seasoned pro and much larger man (Johnson 6'1" to Jeanette 5'10", McVey was also much smaller at 5'10"). Johnson saw how slow and limited Jeanette and McVey were, not to mention smaller, and chose a string of easy wins against them until they (a) improved and (b) he became champ. Instead, his career is full of no-hopers until and after he got his azz handed to him by Willard. Check his record post-Willard--20 fights against Dusty Trunks and Kenny Getup, losing 7 of those to fighters no one remembers. Johnson gets KO'd by the guy Dempsey pulverized, cleanly and without loaded wraps. Imagine what Dempsey would have done to Johnson.
As for a fight with Marciano, I would have to favor Dempsey. Ezzard Charles had Marciano all but beat, but couldn't finish him because mentally, he hadn't recovered from killing a man in the ring. He had half Marciano's nose hanging off his face in their first fight. Charles was a LHW, and a great boxer-puncher, but Dempsey was a harder puncher and also a great defensive fighter in his own right. Both he and Rocky had a similar bob-and-weave style that would have made this a more defensive battle than most people think. It would not resemble a sloppy Pier 6 brawl.

Did you expect Fireman Jim Flynn to knock out Dempsey in the 1st round?
Sure he grew into a national hero, but he never fought the man that most wanted to see him fight, and broke a contract to avoid him, perhaps robbing Harry Wills of his chance to be a national hero.

yes, but it's still a factor. Why is Usyk fighting at Cruiserweight when he's one of the best active Boxers P4P, and the Heavyweight division is so devoid of talent?
Haye, Byrd, Patterson, Moorer, Spinks, Foster... all men comparable to Marciano in size who eventually proved too small for the Heavyweight division had the luck of missing.
Fury is no Duran, but can you name any man who beats the guy who bested Klitchko in Dusseldorf?

Imagine what Dempsey would have done to Johnson? I can imagine what he would have done. AVOID HIM. Which is what he did to an even old Johnson.
As for the rest of your drivel...
Drew the color line on McVey, Langford, and Jeannette, did he?
