You are right, but wait until the movie about his life comes out. Hollywood will make Mickey Ward seem like one of the ATG's and make him even more popular, despite the fact that in real life he was a glorified journeyman.

      In real terms, no.

By today's standards, yes. They let any **** in now.

Atleast McGuigan beat Pedroza, Jess Willard beat Jack Johnson, Johansson beat Patterson. A win over Antonio DeMarco shouldn't be enough to make the IBHOF despite the standards not being too high. Even Gatti is more deserving than Valero.

Do you think Valero done more than Laszlo Papp in the Pro Ranks?

Papp beat some decent fighters (Mueller, Tiger Jones, Christian Christiansen) but was far from great as a pro. I think his inclusion to the IBHOF is more so due to his amateur accomplishments and the great promise he showed as a pro. It wasn't his fault that his career came to an abrupt end unlike in Valero's case. The IBHOF decided to acknowledge Laszlo Papp's greatness despite him being unfairly prevented from being a boxer.

I don't say I necessarily agree with it but it's a different case from Valero's where no sympathy can be given.

McGuigan doesn't deserve to be there, but his resume is much more impressive with wins over Taylor, Pedroza and LaPorte. Valero will never get in the HOF.

Good point. I always wondered did the IBHOF have a rule excluding amateur only greats from being inducted. Men like Felix Savon and Teofilio Stevenson, who dominated as amateurs but weren't allowed to turn pro. I don't know of any amateur HOF's off hand.

They can't make him seem like an ATG. He never even won a (respected) belt! He's an entertaining club fighter and no more. I love him to death, don't get me wrong, but he was limited in the ring. Zab Judah, a never-was, made him look silly for their entire fight. I'm still going to watch that movie, though, and love it.

He didn't win a single round against Zab and was stopped on cuts against Vince Phillips in his only title shot. Mark Wahlberg plays him, and I too will see the fight. Just hope they don't overglorify his career. He was exciting, but very limited.

Get the book "Irish thunder" if you want a better look into his life and career. I'll also see the movie, but the book was pretty good.
