Lewis said: “Let me clear this up for you. Vitali was always supposed to be my last fight. I took it on 10 days notice.
No champ has ever taken on a number 1 contender on such short notice. I looked forward to the moment of starting a family and no more camps. I seriously considered a rematch, but in the end, decided to go with the original plan.
Vitali went on to be a great champion in his own right. I also knew that Father Time was not in my corner.”
“But I’ve always said, I had him figured out by the time the fight was stopped. I took this fight on 10 day notice. On ten days notice it was very hard to get sparring partners that tall with good skills. Most of what I had to learn about Vitaly I had to do so during the fight.
He did well early on because I had to solve the puzzle. Once I did, I was able to get to him more. Unfortunately, his face just couldn’t hold up. I would have preferred to stop him so there wouldn’t be any speculation, but it was not my call. For his safety, the ref stopped the fight.”
I have the HBO vhs tape of the Lennox vs Vitali fight and before the fight there is an interview with Lennox and he says nothing about it being his final fight,in fact he even mentions having more fights after he expected to beat Vitali.
This fabrication by Lennox shows he is still insecure about the Vitali fight even though he won it, it was an incredibly gutsy win, he still feels some guilt and perhaps shame or regret for not taking the rematch. He is still hounded by this by boxing fans. And so now he's trying to change history by saying Vitali was always going to be his last fight. The HBO telecast tape proves otherwise.
Vlad took over the Vacant Tyson undercard on 3 weeks notice and got the offer for lewie a week later, classic bait and switch operation boxing is infamous for
His only good win was a KO over shot 4round fighter Tyson had become.
Worse, the English considered him Canadian which is why he came to the US.

Lennox always discrediting and downplaying the Klitschkos was a sign of weakness and insecurity.
Also Lennox saying he thinks he knows how to beat Usyk is a sign of weakness also. It's Usyk's time now and Lennox trying to steal some of that shine on Usyk reflects poorly.

Still, it's the only blemish on his spectacular career. Well, being booed out of the ring after the Vitali fight was unfair and undeserving. The fans in Staples got caught up in the emotional moment and took Vitali's side. Except for beating Vitali, Lennox totally misplayed the Klitschkos. also saying he would eat both for lunch and dinner then ducking Wladimir's challenge after he beat Mercer.

Heavy by design you say? Proof of this? I call BS. We all saw how much better, faster and more fluent Lewis was in the second Rahman fight when he came in lighter. So unless you have proof this was by design I'd say he was taking the Johnson fight lightly and than ended up with Vits and still won.

Lewis retired right when should have.
A fighter owes nothing to nobody when he actually retires.
The thought that a fighter should take a fight he no longer wants for the sake of legacy or more money, he doesn't need, exists only in the mind of these silly opinions by BS posters.
It is as if these posters have no clue how brutal a boxing career actually is; they speak of these fighters as though they were merely icons to satisfy their vicarious nature.Bronson66 likes this.

Vitai was the biggest guy he ever fought and the most dangerous. It's fairly obvious LL came in bigger by design and the extra bulk may have won him the fight. Again, LL was heavy weight wise but there was no sign of softness or soft spots on his body in the fight. And his stamina was very good to survive the early round battering he endured.

We also have a former heavyweight champion saying before the end of the third that Lewis just isn't in shape. What won Lewis the fight was more effective punching and being the better fighter. Vits showed grit and heat, but not enough to overcome a great like Lennox. I love how you say his stamina was very good when it's obvious to EVERYONE else it was not. TKO 6, Nothing can change that.
