That things like toughness and courage are era-dependant, is highly doubtful, IMO. Anyway, it's something that can't be measured or proven one way or the other!

I tend to look at it as a social thing. Society can be tougher, people adapt. I had to fight in school regularly, my kids did not. Tunney considered jumping into the East River off a barge as men were chasing him as a stowaway, then swimming back to shore in the East River "fun." We thought we were tough riding on the back of public buses, hanging on for dear life.

Older fighters came up in a world that was more immanent, they adapted like all living creatures do.

It's a decision for each fighter to make,but don't couch Vitali's quitting in silly , "gentleman's retirement," terms, because it just makes you look ridiculous!
