That things like toughness and courage are era-dependant, is highly doubtful, IMO. Anyway, it's something that can't be measured or proven one way or the other!
I tend to look at it as a social thing. Society can be tougher, people adapt. I had to fight in school regularly, my kids did not. Tunney considered jumping into the East River off a barge as men were chasing him as a stowaway, then swimming back to shore in the East River "fun." We thought we were tough riding on the back of public buses, hanging on for dear life.

Older fighters came up in a world that was more immanent, they adapted like all living creatures do.

Ali wanted the gloves cut off in the Liston fight to expose what he thought was wrong doing a caustic liniment applied to Liston's gloves.

In the 3rd Frazier fight Frazier was not bouncing on his toes in the corner, after a bad beating in the previous round because he could not see the punches coming, Eddie Futch did the compassionate thing another round might have seen Joe Ko'd,and seriously damaged, no better corner man than Futch ever lived,he did the right thing.

Your ever more desperate attempts to dump on Ali,get more absurd each day.but ,as I said, I don't take you seriously anymore ,so no harm done! lol
      A great post.

      Very well said Sir.

Bronson is a rock star. Might not be everyone cup of tea, but he's a wealth of valuable knowledge.

I don't have a problem with him quitting ,that was his choice, but stop pretending he didn't do so .

Buddy McGirt went the distance with Whittaker with a torn rotator cuff, his decision.

Danny Williams dislocated his right arm early in a fight with Mark Potter, but continued and stopped him with his left.

Danny Williams vs Mark Potter Legendary Full Fight & Highlights! Amazing KO! Williams pre Mike Tyson

Marcel Cerdan sustained the same injury against Lamotta, and continued until he couldn't support the pain anymore.

Artur Abraham Kevin Finnegan, and Muhammad Ali, [the man you call a would be quitter,]all continued fighting with broken jaws

It's a decision for each fighter to make, but don't couch Vitali's quitting in silly , "gentleman's retirement," terms, because it just makes you look ridiculous!

          N.B.

Vitali's degree is in Physical Education not Physiology

Kind of you,I consider myself an average poster, but debating with the likes of Z and Queenie does tend to flatter you in comparison.

The boxing hall of fame is full with fighters who quit, and the OP is mistaken to list some of them.

Average with several flaws and errors. And you a player hatters toward several white heavyweight champions. You do like those who were in the cult of freemasonry though.

Have you ever made a post that did not contain,"several flaws and errors?"

It isn't you, it's him,he has difficulty with reading comprehension and articulating his opinions down on the written page, show me a post of his that hasn't a spelling mistake or a grammatical error? That would be fine if he didn't call others ******!
