The Archie Moore vs. Bert Whitehurst 10 rounds/no title at stake was also scheduled against it. (WGN an independent station. Channel 9 Chicago) 9:00 PM

So there was more money avaiable than just the gate. It looks like, as early as 1954, television was more important to boxing than the live gate.

The tickets were probably cheap to ensure they had a decent size crowd to display to the home TV audience.

Imagine TV having two fights compete against eachother in the same time slot. The golden age of television boxing for sure.

P.S. TV Guide credits Nat Fleischer for compiling the fighters statistics.

TV Guide also printed a score sheet for viewers, (see bottom of page,) but they must of seen the Archie Moore 10 rounder as more important.

      - - Floyd Patterson 168 lbs lost to Joey Maxim 177 lbs by UD in round 8 of 8
"Floyd Patterson, the 19 year old Olympic graduate, won a "newspaper decision" over Joey Maxim last night, but the cagey ex-light heavyweight champion grabbed the verdict that counts - a unanimous if unpopular vote by the three officials. A poll of 11 boxing writers at the ringside at Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway Arena was unanimous for Patterson over his 32 year old opponent. Patterson, using a spectacular leaping right hand lead battered Maxim in the 6th, staggering him twice. Joey fought back gamely under bursts of fire by Patterson grabbing when in danger." -Associated Press
      • Attendance - 2,350
      • Gate - $4,100.00

      Unofficial scorecards
      • AP - 4-3-1 Patterson
      • UP - 4-3-1 Patterson

      Post fight comments
      • "According to the rules, only clean and effective punches count. My fighter landed the effective punches. The other fellow threw only flicking punches. I'm going to see Bob Christenberry (NY boxing commissioner) about it." -Cus D'Amato, Patterson's manager
      • "Was it a good fight to watch? The last two rounds did it for me. He punches fairly hard - a jolting puncher, sort of a miniature Archie Moore or Lloyd Marshall, but not as smart." -Joey Maxim
I'd say given the scarce commentary about the fight it was a dull boxing exhibition type of match. The cagey vet used his skills to nullify the spectacular Floyd offense. The media basically had it a draw, but of course Cus was gonna support his fighter. Much ado over nothing me thinks...

Rocky beat better fighters than Dempsey beat in my opinion.

Z is actually more valuable than Bilediver who is simply an echo machine.
