Why did Hagler avoid the Leonard rematch?

I can’t tell if he’s trolling or didn’t understand the situation, or both.Comment

Leonard offered Hagler a rematch. When Leonards people approached him about it he said to "tell Ray to get a life".
Now I don't believe this was a duck. Hagler retired and stayed that way. Had he come back and not tried to avenge, that could be called a duck.
Was he just tired of boxing? It's politics? Or did he think Ray had his number?
I personally think he was frustrated he lost the decision. An old adage in boxing was you had to beat the champ, meaning convincingly, to win the title. While i initially had him winning, after watching again i had Leonard winning. In my mind it doesnt mattrr how big or small a win is. A win is a win. Could this have played a part in why Hagler retired, or could it have been for other reasons?Comment

I think he was disgusted with boxing and the politics of it. He felt he won that fight and was unjustly robbed and wouldn’t line the pockets of anymore boxing insiders.Comment

Yeah, it's not like he needed the money either and had already secured his legacy.Comment

I believe Hagler decided (said) before the fight, "win or lose" he would quit the game.
He made good on his word. The Brothers Petronelle wanted him to stop so much that they offered not to take their 33% of the purse.
Hagler refused and insisted, they had come this far together and he wanted then to take their percentage. He insisted they take their percentage.
I believe, both Hagler and his retinue intended to stop after Leonard no matter what happened.
This 'legacy' thing talked about on this forum is nonsense. I doubt there has ever been a boxer who took a fight for that silly reason.
I'm sure some may have said it. But I'm sure it was just noise.
This is prize fighting.Comment
