Johnson lived with **********s and used them as did Langford,Corbett,Dempsey and Sullivan.I have never seen any proof that Johnson ever lived off a ********** .as Monzon and that Haitian light heavy did.
'I'm not defending Johnson I'm just questioning your claim that lots of people from all races disliked him,and Im referring to those who actually knew him/Nat Fleischer , Tad Dorgan, and Sam McVey all thought he was a fine man .
Johnsons Wife was pushed to suicide by her own people the White Race. Blackburn did bloody Johnson's nose and when some of Blackburn's friends were going round with the hat for him whilst he was in prison Johnson said **** him .
He did however pay for McVey's funeral
    Good post, as usual.
Joe Botti's "Joe Jeanette, Boxing's Ironman" is an insighful take on on of the true greats of the fight game. Your summer reading list my friend.

He signed to fight Johnson knowing he was 6 years inactive past his best, the only time that fight was viable.

Do you follow boxing or just ape unsubstantiated opinions?
Not the only time the fight was viable, he just didn't have the burden of losing the heavyweight championship anymore.

Exactly he would not entertain Johnson when he himself was champion.

Joe Botti contacted me and asked if I wanted to join a new boxing forum he has created. He insists Jeannette never weighed more than 165lbs for any of his fights with Johnson.I profoundly disagree with him,and believe my joining his forum would only mean a litany of arguments for both of us,and I can get all the discord I need from the 3 stooges here!

Eric Clapton did! (I have heard.)

A boxer from the past can be forgiven.

No, that guy needs the interaction/controversy to get his site going. Do a friend a favor and disagree with him.

                      - When Hart humiliated JJohnson, Jeffries refused to fight either saying neither were worth fighting. That's when he retired, but go ahead and say he was ducking Hart if it can get your minder to change your Barney BigBoys.
