In those days it was easy for a guy like me to live violently, as if there were no tomorrow. I'm not looking for either glory or sympathy. I'm no hypocrite. If ever a guy enjoyed raising hell, it was me. And few guys raised more hell or had more fun doing it. If I was a sinner, I sinned happy.'

Nice quote. Walker had some serious scar tissue above his eyes.

There are some fighters who you could pass in the street, look at and just know they are boxers. It’s written all over their face. Walker was one of those fighters.

I've known quite a few. The was an old man named Babe Apeice years ago hung out at .y fathers bar. He had to be in his 80's and this was back in the early 80's his nose was as twisted as I've seen any nose and his ears were so cauliflowered that didn't look real. That was my first experience seeing g an ex pug up close. I still remember his voice and the stories he told. He was broke when he passed away and my father paid for his service.

It looks like Mickey leads with his left eye.

Had a high school girlfriend. Her dad boxed and her and sisters use to tease him because his nose was completely void of cartilage and if you pushed on it with your fingers you could completely flatten it onto his face.

We went our separate ways, but ran into her a few decades later and sure enough Dad died from Parkinsons Snydrome.

Those guys who look like boxers are often hurting real bad inside. It just takes time to come out.

It was certainly a different time. Rules weren't as eagerly enforced and if you went to the hospital or doctor it was probably very serious. Now that you bring up the nose, I think old Babes's was like that as well. I vaguely remember him telling me they removed the bone or cartilage because it had been broken so many times. I doubt I would have remembered that had you not mentions your old girlfriends dad. How long ago was that if you don't mind me asking?

I think the section is being a little hard on itself: The fact this thread exists shows that incredible fighters temporarily under the veil of obscurity, hidden from that luminious light of epistemology, come fourth into the dialectic shine of historical scrutiny. As long as we have texts and people who can read them, history can be debated, revised...

Who knows, maybe Walker will become the next ****tail blurb for those impressing others with their boxing lore. I certainly remember when to mention "Mike McCallum, that guy who hit to the body" instantly gave one a few raised eyebrows of approval. And lets not forget the "Charley Burley" card! which instantly propels one into the land of boxing punditry.

More than a few great fighters were around during Walker's time, so there might have been a proverbial jam up at the funnel of recognition...Certainly this was another golden age of boxing. You had those twins that fought also, they were incredible fighters by all accounts. Greb overshadowed more than a few people who would have otherwise been discussed more.

It has been 50 years when I knew him (early 70s); he died sometime in the 1990s. He suffered a few years first.
