Who knows, maybe Walker will become the next ****tail blurb for those impressing others with their boxing lore. I certainly remember when to mention "Mike McCallum, that guy who hit to the body" instantly gave one a few raised eyebrows of approval. And lets not forget the "Charley Burley" card! which instantly propels one into the land of boxing punditry.

More than a few great fighters were around during Walker's time, so there might have been a proverbial jam up at the funnel of recognition...Certainly this was another golden age of boxing. You had those twins that fought also, they were incredible fighters by all accounts. Greb overshadowed more than a few people who would have otherwise been discussed more.
    Circa 1975

I once stumbled into a Catskill bar an encountered three old ***ish men sitting at an old dank bar.

I pointed to a worn photo behind the bar and said to my friend, that's Benny Leonard, "the ****** wizard "

That was all it took, the old men bought me a beer.

I hate that for anyone. It's hard enough getting old let alone going thru that as well.

Funny you say this, again jarring my memory. I grew up in RI. My father seemed to know everyone in the state and him owning a bar he would take me along during the day when he'd stop by a friend's bar (there were plenty of them) or other bars to see what they were doing and how he could raise the bar. Anyway, back then I can remember walking into many old dive bars, you know the ones that smell like old beer and cigarettes as soon as you walk in, and there were always pictures of boxers on the walls. Being many Italians in RI there were a lot of pictures of Italian American fighters. But there were plenty of others as well. You said a few days ago I've haven't mentioned what I do for a living. I'm also in the bar business, and I try to follow my father's footsteps for success and stay friendly with everyone and visit other places. My point with this, you don't go into to many places anymore where fighters adorn the walls.

Right now I'm managing someone else bar, but I am in talks about opening up a new bourbon bar and restaurant with a friend of mine. Depending on the layout of this place there will be pictures of old fighters and other old sports figures. Nothing after the 1950's. I want it to have an old feel with an upscale menu. Hopefully with some luck we can get the ball rolling within the next 12 to 18 months. I have and continue to follow the way my father did business, and when we do get this next endeavor off the ground I'll be more than happy to invite yourself and a few others on here for the grand opening.

              Real cool.

Rhode Island? I spent a week there one afternoon. -- Lol -- Had to drive up my Grand ma from Jersey for a funeral.

But yea, lots of paisanos there. Lots of Christian Arabs as well. A real Eillis Island area.

I grew up in an Ellis Island small town in Jersey. Next to us was a white-white Methodist/Christian town.

The local newspapers once pointed out that our small town of 5K (Irish-Italian-Pol-***,) had seven liquor outlets (between bars and package stores,) and only one Church (St. Lukes)

While the white-white small town right next to us had the exact opposite, one liquor outlet and seven churches.

And that one liquor license was grandfathered in, and once the owner died the town would go "dry "

Rhode Island is a good place to own a bar.

Man I wish!! I've been in NC the past 18 years. RI got EXPENSIVE!! I'll be back there to visit in July. I make sure to get back at least once a year. Still have a lot of family and friends there. RI was a great place growing up. If we had kept my father's bar I would have been set for life, but things just didn't work out that way after he passed. Where did you go in RI? I've probably passed through your town before. Had a cousin that use to live in Jersey city, and I've probably made 20, 25 trips to Atlantic city to see fights. We're you by the ocean?

No, I lived way up north, just south of the New York State border. Waldwick, N.J.

I was thirty minutes from USMA at West Point, NY. The Point use to be my childhood playground. Even at a young age my father would drop me and my cousin at the gate and we would spend the afternoon there, alone. Perfectly safe and beautiful. On any given Saturday there would be three different (usually free) sporting events, along with the other tourist efforts. E.g museum.

You never passed through Waldwick, lol if you did and blinked, you missed it. It's north-south border was literally 1 mile. It's east-west border a little larger, about 2 miles.

Not even any pics of your favorite, Vinny Paz? Well I guess Marciano will have to do then.

My uncle had a small social club in Providence with an autographed Vinny Pazienza picture, autographed Marvin Hagler and a picture of Rocky Marciano. That's the closest I got.
