A heavy puncher such as Louis or Dempsey would only need to aim for Harry's little, narrow-shouldered body, which is a more sure target. Really, they merely have to hit him anywhere with a little repetition. It is not conditional. All time greats hit all fighters they fight, even other ATGs, a simple fact. Or they are not an ATG. Greb cannot take many heavy body shots from a big heavyweight puncher like either. It is a matter of physics, not will.

Actually there is a Greb quote the Ghost has posted several times, where Greb, replying to one of the reporters regarding the now imfamous sparing session, something to the effect, "Yea, I did really well against him, but if I had to go a true distance with him, he would kill me. He hit too hard."

        - - Used to know a fella named Grub, an ethnological variation on the spelling of Greb who was well put together enough to take it to Greb, so there's that...

Are you sure Harry is just giving praise to lure Dempsey into a fight? I only ask that because if you believe Grebs words than why not believe Dempsey's words concerning Sam Langford?

Absolutely - thus is history - I am not sure about anything - your thought has as much validity
            as any of mine.

That's the kind of thinking (as a retired high school history teacher,) I'm trying to sell you on.

            Everyone speaks with an agenda!

I know I sound like a pretentious prick but some (actually many) of these posters constantly speak in absolutes so often that it drives me to distraction: "Ali was the greatest; Johnson never ducked anyone; it was Dempsey's fault alone he didn't fight Wills," Etc. -- all these statements are too simple mind to take seriously. NOTHING in this world is ever as simple as these guys claim it to be.

On Greb. There are two ways he can go, say Dempsey is great, so, as you suggest, hope Dempsey might take the bait. The other way is to call Dempsey a bum and hope he pisees him off enough that he wants to kill him.

Had Greb said either, I wouldn't have believed him outright.

And, Oh yeah, everyone, once in a while speaks from the heart but that is rare and it is almost impossible to recognize it when it happens.

That's why in a different thread I was talking about Jeffries on the train, speaking right after the loss to JJ. Is a spontaneous outbrust more honest than a comtempated thought or are outburst too emotional to be fully truthful?

Of course instead of having that conversation, the absolute boys appear and start calling me names. All I can do is shrug and know they stopped actually thinking about the issue and are now just crusading their opinion.

Are you on a "Greb is the greatest" crusade?

Crusades are OK just remember to always think "I just might be wrong" and listen to the challenges that come.

Greatest middleweight? Probably. P4p greatest? Only behind Sam Langford in that department in my opinion. Could he beat any fighter in history? Hell no. I don't believe any fighter can. There will always be a style that is another fighters krytonite. All that said, I do have an immense respect for Greb's accomplishments and resume. Quite possibly the best resume in boxing history. Like anything else that is of course arguable.

Don't you have some other people you have not seen fight that you can include too? The film on Langford is lousy. Not to you though. I thought you were a little smarter than that. My mistake. If you were a history teacher, I can see why today's kids learn about zero from their from their so-called teachers. "Hey kids, I have heard that some things I will now regale you with.. Close your books."

I don't know if you are happily retired, but I am happy about it.

Hyperbole is part of social intercourse... It is a way of making a point... sort of "shoot for the sun and reach the moon" vis a vis, talk up ole Harry to make the point he was a live dog against some of the other greats. What is incredible is how Greb took on such mythological underpinnings... the man who fought with one eye... etc etc. At the end of the day Greb had the ability to fight up in weight, we know that (Tunney).

Actually most of history is in books and not captured on video. Why do I need to see a fighter fight to know what they accomplished? Greatness isn't based on fantasy fights and who you think would win, it's based on what a fighter did during his time. Langford beat the best from lightweight to heavyweight. It doesn't matter what you think of him, it's still unprecedented. I didn't see Julius Caesar conquer most of the known world at the time, but I have no reason to disbelieve what I've read. The list can go on and on.
