  • I give up - Overrated / Underrated is a term widely in use.

The term(s) "Overrated" / "Underrated" are not among my personal favorites. Too many undeclared variables. Over/Underrated by whom? What is your frame of reference? This board? Boxing writers? (A near extinct species).
    But.......
If we keep all that overthinking to the side, which of these guys would you consider "Overrated" or "Underrated"?

My 3 most Overrated: Jersey Joe Walcott, Evander Holyfield, Rid**** Bowe.

3 most Underrated: Marvin Hart, Jess Willard, Tyson Fury.

    James J Corbett
    Bob Fitzsimmons
    James J. Jeffries
    Marvin Hart
    Tommy Burns
    Jack Johnson
    Jess Willard
    Jack Dempsey
    Gene Tunney
    Max Schmeling
    Jack Sharkey
    Primo Carnera
    Max Baer
    Jim Braddock
    Joe Louis
    Ezzard Charles
    Jersey Joe Walcott
    Rocky Marciano
    Floyd Patterson
    Ingamar Johansson
    Sonny Liston
    Muhammad Ali
    Joe Frazier
    George Foreman
    Leon Spinks
    Larry Holmes
    Michael Spinks
    Mike Tyson
    James Buster Douglas
    Evander Holyfield
    Rid**** Bowe
    Michael Moorer
    Shannon Briggs
    Lennox Lewis
    Hasim Rahman
    Wladimir Klitschko
    Tyson Fury

When I think overrated, a fighter can still be a good or even great fighter, but perhaps receives too much praise, particularly by casual fans. Insisting Ali is the greatest P4P fighter of all time makes him overrated. Still a great HW, but not nearly the greatest of all time. That was a moniker he bestowed upon himself. Same with Mayweather—clearly not the best ever.

When everyone calls a fighter a "10" and he's really just a "9.8" the term loses its meaning.

Over and under rated are horribly overused terms on this board. Along with . . . "weak era."

#1 most overrated fighter in my opinion is James Toney and by who would be “The internet fans”

He seems fairly ranked by actual boxing people, 2nd Ballot Hall Of Fame inductee which I think is fair as I wouldn’t consider him first ballot and he wasn’t voted on the fist ballot. Not usually on ATG lists.

But the internet fans however take it onto a life of its own where Toney is some ATG fighter who never got hit and dominated other great fighters with ease when in reality none of this happened in his career.

You’ll have fantasy fight threads on here where Toney schools, dominates and knocks out the likes of Canelo, Froch, AJ, Deontay Wilder and many others when he did nothing in his career to have any kind of logical basis for those opinions.

Sonetime just being in great fights makes you an ATG with the fans. E.g. Ray Mancini is in the HOF. Who did he ever beat?

Basically everyone who is a favorite is overrated. You never hear Tommy Burns, for example, is my favorite HW. It's always Ali, Louis, Dempsey, etc. Of course they're all greats but no record can hold up to fanboy esteem.

Likewise, Tommy Burns is underrated. Not to say everyone who is no one's greatest or favorite is but most are.

M.Spinks, Jeffries, and Tom Sharkey are the best underrateds imo. I understand these names often grace historian's lists but they hardly get any love from fans.

I also think it's odd to read JJW as an overrated. Who ever praises Jersey? He's usually only a part of Marciano and Louis debates. I would have thought both Jersey and Charles were underrated.

A: A prime time Jose Luis Ramirez, a guy who would later snap the underfeated streaks of Chapo Rosario and Sweet Pea Whitaker.

But ya, Mancini's trip i to the hall way largely fueled by being a huge fan favorite.

Clearly lost to Whitaker though, right?

But I’m a big fan of Ramirez he’s a great example of an incredibly underrated fighter.

He beat Arguello in my opinion.
