It's actually impossible to gain punching power through gaining weight and "putting on" muscle

also factor in the more muscle put on, even if they are fast twitch - will kill your reflex time as more fibers are being engaged and in turn make your punches telegraphed. As fatigue sets in it gets even worse. I think this is the sole reason Mayweather dominated Canelo and avoided every blow (he saw them coming so easily).

when you are at your natural weight, everything works better.

you will hit your hardest when your body has matured and your weight is as low as possible (with proper training, not starving). You will be both strong and fast, and able to get the most leverage out of your body when you are limber.

Also when a fighter moves up in weight, he has to adjust his timing and style to a bigger slower fighter. He may be able to land easier at the higher weights, and will be able to sit down on punches better - where as a smaller quicker opponent can only be hit by shorter quicker punches. Bigger fighters however in general can take a better shot for the most part, and will be able to push a smaller fighter around - knocking them off balance. And the end of the day the quality of the fighter overall is the most important factor, not a few lbs or height.

this is why you see Joe Louis obliterate a 6 ft 7 250 lb buddy Baer while only weighing 200 lbs. you give a guy like Joe room to land by nature of having such a huge body, he can actually hit you harder than he could say, a guy like Billy Conn.

the Jimmy Ellis situation, Ellis naturally gained weight. This thread is about bulking up and moving up a weight class. Jimmy Ellis never looked blown up in his entire career.

if we look at Holyfield at 205 and compare him at 220. Holyfield at 205 is a much better fighter and puncher at 205. Faster, better technique and more snap. A harder puncher. You look at Ken Norton, at 205 hes hitting much better than at 235, where he looks like a sluggish body builder lobbing his arms. Failing to stop anyone, even smaller fighters. These are 2 prime examples of fighters who bulked and lost a lot.
i've learned a lot from you I feel you have much experience in boxing with insights to get me thinking. reflex time and fast twitch I was ignorant about and thought the two went together 100%. You talk from experience and I respect your writing.

Even when he got it right (predicting the moons appearance for Jupiter) he got it wrong a whole lot... Who could have known how complex Gravity was? Yet now we know that Galileo was a genius. I put him up in the top 5 genus list: Next to Newton... compared to Darwin and Einstein were practically in the toilet lol.

In truth Queenie comes up with some great stuff, I mean that no irony intended. I consider him one of my favorite posters. Within that 5% are some real gems!
queeny has a great command of the english language including american slang. he knows old english phrases too but when he believes in a boxer like any fan he overlooks anything bad because he rates them highest. me i love the way he winds people up as that makes arguing my points more fun back and forth.
i reckon he must be an older man. he is very witty.

          • i always wandered in boxers whether they use fast twitch or slow twitch muscle fibres. fast twitch last up to ten seconds then need rest. slow twitch use air to power but are not very explosive. maybe it needs a blend of both fibres. educate me if you know.

I don't think it works quite like that Nathan. Ultimately what we do is take a set of movements, and we see what we need to do to complete a movement. Then when we are training, we break down the type of conditioning we need to maximize the movement. All movements combine the two types of muscle fibers.

The general quality of movement is more to do with how one uses the body. It is training. So for example, to hit like Mayorga, or Tyson, one has to have a strong core, the ability to twist rather violently, and leg strength to grip into the ground. But the other aspects involve what we relax... So the shoulders have to be relaxed... See how that works?

yeah i get it. people like me forget that like norman mailer said in when we were kings on foreman's training footwork is an art like ballet and the whole body has to learn the moves. hence when boxers repeat and repeat stuff to teach the body the movements so well. I guess boxers like everyone have a mix of fibres for stamina and stength.

                • The goal is to explode and not telegraph that you are exploding like amir khan and canelo do. Ray leonard explodes from a tension free limberness, had you stood in front of him you literally couldn't read what he's gonna throw or even see it.

these tight muscle bound “explosive” fighters look fast but cant land anything because there is a micro delay on the launch of their punches, a coiling / bristling of over developed muscle fibers. If you watched a cobra in slow motion it suffers from the same problem against a mongoose. The snakes velocity is high, but the stored energy releasing from the coil is what causes a micro delay (telegraph) that allows the mongoose to not only avoid the strike, but **** with the snakes accuracy by approaching it with a constant bobbing perpetual movement. This often causes the snake to strike without confidence and miss altogether.

theres a reason they called archie the old mongoose. Had archie fought Canelo at 175 it would he the easiest knockout on the high level that he would ever score. Employing a different style than mayweather but beating him with the same skillset.
