  • If GGG Were To Beat Canelo Would He Be Recognized As An ATG?

If Golovkin were to upset Alvarez in their upcoming fight would he then achieve the status of an all time great? What do you think?
Personally I expect Canelo to beat him convincingly and maybe stop him late.BUT.

GGG, beat on fair score cards already but was robbed into a draw. To beat Canelo you needs to win 9 rounds or more on a fair score card and settle for close decision vs his " judges. " That how he was defeated. GGG is already a top 20 ATG middle weight.

      His next fight notwithstanding.

Don't we need to wait for it to all be over, for both guys, before the evaluation begins?

Is this his last fight? What will Canelo eventually achieve? How does he win? Etc.

IMO it's too soon for the discussion; not history yet.

I think we gotta establish what we mean by "All Time Great". I remember there was another site I used to visit that had a similar discussion about Hopkins when he retired; essentially everyone had him ranked roughly the same, but they all used different adjectives to describe what that ranking was. Does being ranked top 10 in your weight class make you an ATG? Is it top 25? 50? That always becomes an issue.

FWIW, I think most people give him credit for the draw in their first fight, heck the only judge who scored it a loss against him was reprimanded for her card. Despite that, having gotten the W on paper would have carried more credence with it, and basically solidified him in the eyes of all (sad really). If he gets the win in the last fight, I doubt it moves the scales for most, as he is pretty much seen by them as already having accomplished it. If anything it just adds on to his legacy that he was able to have some longevity and had a solid win at an age in which most MWs have long since been retired.

          - - GGG already in the HOF based on his career where he ducked nobody while being widely ducked by many of his peers.

ATG potential was there, but many potential ATGs of this misbegotten era simply can't make many good fights because of the diplomatic, career enhancing ducking going on.

The talent pool of his era was there, but the structural framework of boxing has been altered for the better of those best fighters as far as purses, but less so as to best fights.

Your opinions don't matter, halfwit--not to a single poster on here. Don't you ever get it?

Probably not, but it would be close.

No probably not. But also Canelo's career does factor into the formula. Also as time passes contemporary bias fall away.

                    - - Golovkin likely takes a beating for a magnificent payday that in no way represents what he was in full sway. Ali lost 3 of his last 4 fights and usually rated 1st or 2nd in all time heavyweight ratings.
