Who can forget the blistering title run of Charles Martin?
Malignaggi was basically a two-hit wonder, winning titles in two weight classes from fringe contenders and losing them almost immediately.
From '79 - '86 there was a long string of one-hit wonders being crowned HW champion. Weaver, Dokes, Page, Tubbs, Berbick, and a couple others.

Davey was not to become the next Ketchel, but he had some real talent, in spite of what some feckless typewriter jockey might have written while seated at a safe distance.
I respect the fighters. I like to look at the sum of the individual:

He did an interview with Ollie for the boxing rag he was writing for and told me he was visibly trying to control his shakes as he interviewed him. I gather Ollie is the last guy anyone wants to tangle with at Last Chance Saloon.billeau2 likes this.

Wins the title vs Coetzee in October 1979, loses it against Weaver five months later in a shocker, gets knocked out by Berbick after three more months. Right there his slide to oblivion begins, culminating with a tragic end of life.
Interestingly, after the defeat against Berbick, Tate won all his next fights except the last - in 1988. Granted, not against stellar opposition. But usually we witness former champs getting beaten up by journeymen in the final segment of their career.
Still, Tate is a quintessential one-hit wonder.Last edited by Tatabanya; 06-30-2022, 08:07 AM.GhostofDempsey likes this.
