Robinson didn't KO Fullmer whilst moving backwards. It's a myth started by shortsighted careless viewers.

I think you could argue a check left hook could be thrown while backing up. Probably not a wise move, but doable

      - - Ricky chasing l'l floyd threw a leaping left hook that landed a nano second before l'l floydy's in retreat left check hook landed.

Net predetermined physics results left Ricky off balance leaping head first into the ring turnbuckle as l'l floydy was further accelerated in reverse to the ring center that spelled The End for Ricardo.

The check left hook is older than Floyd vs Ricky, its actually one of the oldest boxing maneuvers in general. Floyd did it with a spin out and knocked Hatton out so its memorable.

When Edgar is talking about whats possible and what isn’t he means with proper footwork. You can’t throw a proper leveraged shot without the feet anchoring themselves somehow. Robinson backed up then stopped and hit Fullmer, same with Moore vs Rocky.

you can’t actually throw a proper punch while in the process of backing up, unless a hack is found

Its theoretically possible and highly improbable. You would have to make a big transfer going back and catch the guy as your back foot came down (simultaneously) If one wants to call that a backwards punch lol.

I just watched it 10 times again. Nope, Archie does not stop at all knocking Marciano down. He moves backwards continually.

Fullmer was going forward. Robinson was standing still and timed him beautifully.

Oh yes . ANY punch can be thrown whilst moving backwards, but with NO power, so they are just "motions". As for the "check hook" (great names they invent) it's merely sidestepping and an allowing the onrushing opponent to walk into the punch. You see them quite often but rarely with damaging power.

Back to Robinson (and others) he definitely moved forward with that left hook, and as has been pointed out by another poster, he made the same punch (twice) in the previous 30 seconds, but not strong, and Fullmer wasn't coming in. Archie Moore definitely stopped, and had his feet planted and you can see the weight transferred, without forward movement. This was the closest example.

It's all in the feet, as every real punch begins there.

If the weight isn't properly transferred it's just an "arm" punch. The exception I make is that one theoretically can be going backwards, and with an onrushing opponent, uppercut him. Rarely very effective I'd think. Basic boxing, taught at the beginning, in "how to throw a punch".

He is not moving backwards continually, they both are moving forward and backwards. A very active fight with lots of close work. They show the KD in slo-mo where Marciano comes in low, swings and misses with a right, Archie evades it by just leaning his BODY backwards, but keeps his feet planted, then , taking advantage of the missed right swing, doesn't move his feet but moves his body and his weight forward and drops M with a rt. uppercut. M is still off balance. SUPER timing, with no foot movement, just weight transfer. A rare show of evasion and skill.

I'm reminded of what my trainer, the great Frankie Kerr, once quipped. A rare thing for him as he was normally VERY dour. He said of one of our heavier team mats. "He'll make a great Light-Heavy................light in the head, and heavy on the feet"..

His name was Dunbar, and although not a good boxer, was actually very fast on his feet.
