If you train to fight a certain way, under certain conditions, then you will know how to handle yourself... toughness? Its all relative. If I had to pick? Give me John Blume and Donn Draeger, martial arts pioneers. Both men were incredibly rugged, loved to mix it up, and were very able!

Anyway, as choices from that middle area are concerned, Jon Bluming is a great choice, as would be Jan Plas. Donn Draeger was a great US Eastern arts pioneer, serving as one of the key bridges between traditional Japanese arts and the US in the 50s and 60s.
Raffi Liven, Chris Dolman, Wilfred Burgos, Gokor Chivchyan, the tip if the iceberg I suppose. Everybody loves their sensei!

Def a mensch! Heck of a writer as well. Look for an article he wrote about Oyama in The Asian Journal of Martial Arts... One of my favorite pieces ever. A real martial artist...old school.
