  • Best MW Champion since Marvin Hagler?

Its been over 35 years since the great Marvin Hagler successfully defended his middleweight title; since then, over 40 men have laid claim to one of the titles he held (not counting the WBO in this discussion). Of those, 24 of them had multiple title defenses at 160 lbs. they are listed here:

    Arthur Abraham
    Bernard Hopkins
    Daniel Geale
    Daniel Jacobs
    Felix Sturm
    Gennady Golovkin
    Gerald McClellan
    James Toney
    Jermain Taylor
    Jermall Charlo
    Jorge Fernando Castro
    Julian Jackson
    Julio César Chávez Jr.
    Keith Holmes
    Kelly Pavlik
    Michael Nunn
    Mike McCallum
    Reggie Johnson
    Ryota Murata
    Sebastian Sylvester
    Sebastian Zbik
    Sergio Martínez
    Sumbu Kalambay
    William Joppy

What I am asking, is of these who was the best in their prime at MW? Not who had the best resume, but rather who would do the best H2H of the rest. If these fighters, all fought each other in mythical matchups while at their MW primes who would end up with the best record? Anyone you see as a clear favorite (23-0)? Who are the top few? Its been a long time since the Marvelous one owned the MW division, who has been the best since?

If we are going strictly by your criteria, I would go with James Toney even though that wasn’t his best weight.

Roy was the best at his peak.

      B-Hop had the best run.

      Golovkin was the most dominant.

I agree Roy was the best, but his peak was 168-175. He only had two title fights at 160: beat Hopkins to take the vacant title, and defended it once a year later

Yeah his MW run was very short, I even think he had two or three fights at 168 prior to his lone defence.

I have to side with BHop first and then Golovkin.

              - - AAbraham had a decent run.

Toney never won a clean decision over McCallum, KDed by Reggie Johnson for a S/D, and way behind the cards vs cracked out Nunn before wearing him out. Embarrassed by a masterclass by Tiberi that raised up one of the great stinks including investigations when the judges gave Toney the fight. Never a dominant middle.

              Poppy too much sissy.

              Pavlik had a solid run

Golovkin had the most domineering run of KOs post Marv as a record setting middle "Soviet" so popular he even had substantial endorsement income.

Canelo 2x champ gave up his belts because of Mauricio incompetence and Oscar incompetence was the only middle capable of putting the stake through Golovkin who ain't been right ever since, a better scalp than Roy over Poppy

I guess from that list I would have to go with Hopkins first, James Toney 2nd and McClellan 3rd best.
Though of those 3, Toney is my personal favorite.

Prime Golovkin beats prime Hagler with ease. Nash out.

                    Hopkins
                    Toney
                    Ggg

To bad we didn't get enough of

Dmitry Pirog who knocked Jacobs out and was supposed to fight ggg.

IMO Pirog would of beat GGG.

                    That and the signed

Canelo vs. Paul Williams (Wasn't for MW)

                    Would of been awesome

I also think Williams would of beat Canelo back then.
