Haye never learned how to fight. He is not beating Marciano or any other ATG heavyweight champion.

Dempsey typically wore 5 oz gloves for his championship bouts. Marciano wore no larger than 6 oz gloves for his championship bouts. Both were horse hair filled.

          I believe Marciano's gloves were 8 ounces, here's what I got . . .

First: visual; if you watch Marciano-Walcott I the gloves look too big to be 6oz.

Second: There was a glove dispute before the LaStarza fight in September '53. Marciano had some involvement with designing a new glove and LaStarza wanted no part of it. Al Weill backed off stating they would fight with the standard glove. [NYT 09/10/1953 "Marciano Assured of Glove Rules"]

(The article title is misleading as to its content.)

Third: Marciano gets his way two months later when the NYSAC adopts the new glove that Marciano had some say in designing. The glove had a shorter thumb and [quote] "will remain at eight ounces but will have a punching area of twenty-three square inches instead of the present sixteen square inches." [NYT December 24th, 1953, "Thumb Shorter, Padding Increased in Ring Glove."]

It looks as though the gloves were 8 ounces at least for Marciano's championship run, but after January 1st 1954 more padding had been moved from the wrist and sides of the glove to the (punching) front of the glove, partly at Marciano's behest.

Kind of like the difference between Reyes and Everlast gloves, with Everlast having more padding at the (punching) front while Reyes distributes the same ounces more evenly across the glove (or so it once was; I have no clue how they look today.)

P.S. Sorry, let me add that neither article mentions a manufacturer or type of padding, but I think it stays horse hair well into the 1970s.

When I was a kid - 1960s - the glove standard was (I think) 4oz for flyweight throught Featherweight; 6oz for lightweight through middleweight; and 8oz for LHW & HW

Sometime in the '70s early '80s HWs started wearing 10oz gloves and MWs 8oz.

Then of course there is the SRL effect that needs to be factored in . . . LOL

            By the 1990s it seems 6oz gloves disappeared, but I haven't watched a batamweight fight in decades, so . . . ?

I seriously doubt Marciano wore 8 oz gloves.

Dempsey generally wore 5 oz gloves for his championship bouts. Louis generally wore 6 oz gloves as champion. 6 oz was the standard up until some point in the mid to late 60’s. All Ali’s championship bouts in the 70’s he wore 8 oz gloves. I know in his first reign he wore 6 oz gloves vs Mildenburger.

                - - Interesting. Must've been German commish leftovers from the Schmeling era.

So the empirical evidence means nothing to you?

Why would the NYT make the statement "will remain 8 ounces" ?

In the 70’s, in terms of heavyweight title fights, were all 8 oz.

Looking into this Marciano use 6 oz gloves up until his bout with ****ell which was fought with 8oz gloves under the rules of that state.

After this bout heavyweight title fights were all 8 oz up until AROUND the time 15 round title fights came to an end. One exception (at least) was Ali’s bout with Mildenburger in 1966 which was fought with 6 oz gloves.

Looking into this further YES Marcianos first bout with Walcott was fought with 8 oz Everlast gloves.
