Gene tunney vs Carpentier (that fought dempsey)

I'm writing this on the history forum because the fantasy fight section is full of casuals.

Carpentier fought a better prime version of dempsey and made a really good showing, Carpentier was small being a lhw but he had all the attributes of a world champion. In his fight with Dempsey he came to WIN but ultimately lost.

I personally think Carpentier is overrated. He was a war hero who's abilities were elevated because of that stature, not because of anything he did in the ring. Nearly every time he stepped up he lost.
no knock on the man or the fighter, he was obviously good. But I don't think that version fares any better than the version who eventually lost to Tunney. A good fighter, but not even an elite of his time. Tunney, like Greb, Loughran, Gibbons and others were the top of the lightheavy weight food chain. Carpentier for all his fame was a second teir fighter compared to these guys....in my opinion.

Historically Carp was thought of as the best fighter ever to come out of Europe. He was a multiple title holder with one punch ko power in his right hand. He was so highly regarded for many decades you just can’t ignore that history.

I never looked much into georges because I never thought much of him to be honest so my opinion is clearly bias and what I do know of the guy would only come from learning about other people.

I get what you're saying about Dempsey, but also Leapai came to fight Wlad too, and also got put on his ass in the first half of the fight. We don't praise Alex or suggest the version of Alex that came for Wlad would be much of anything for Fury or Lennox.

I feel the same way about Carpentier. He came to fight alright, and by fight I mean get absolutely handled by Jack and so I don't think 21 Georges does much if any better than 24 georges had, maybe does worse by being more game.

As far as prestige and history goes. I've thrown shade on Tunney, Dempsey, and Greb's legacy because I think their legacy outshines their actual ability. With Europeans it's a whole different monkey but same era. It's not about the very American colorline or avoiding black people. Instead their corruption is more national based. The way Euro ranks worked was by vote, when the French have the controlling vote, like magic, the best euros are French, then in the 30s when fascism was on the rise the *******s united for controlling vote and we get Spain, Italy, and German doing uniquely well during that era because of it. How many great french HWs are there? How many great German HWs are there? How many great Italians? You never questioned how and why these nationalities that haven't done very well on the world stage for like 90 years and had never done very well on the world stage for the first 40 years of gloved international boxing did well from the 20s-30s maybe a bit of the teens and 40s? That's how. Once you are the top of the euro ranks you get to fight the champion. Nothing can take away Primo or Max's wins, I'm not saying champions who won didn't earn their win, all I am saying is if they had to beat men to get ranked they may not have been the best man from Europe in the first place. That said, Georges is not a Primo or Schmeling. He's more like Paulino in that the political power behind him did all they could to get him where he needs to be but they can't win fights for him and when push came to shove dude just didn't not have the goods.

Got to suck when you hit a dude and he breaks your digits and wrist by being too hard for you and then KO's you stone dead becaue he hits so much harder. Georges was heavily outmatched and I mostly regard him as cheap euro garbage of the era.

Greb, Tunney, and Dempsey all have an argument for the men they didn't fight. I don't appreciate the freepass attitude they often get but I do appreciate their argument. Carpentier I'm pretty sure gets his ass kicked by every single one of the major black hws of the era because he did by a few and some not so major.
