    KRISTIAN LAIGHT: "Mr. Reliable"

If you don't recognize him you'll get it when you look hom up.

You got to be impressed that he was only stopped five times. He always earned his dollar. He never let anyone down.

OK now to respect the OP - my favorite

    Jack Dempsey: 'Kid Blackie'
I’m more partial to his other nickname, the Manassa Mauler. I like how it exemplifies an old school way of nicknaming boxers. Take the boxer’s hometown and add an accurately descriptive title at the end to creative an often alliterative two part nickname.(e.g. Galveston Giant, Brockton Blockbuster).

I was always partial to "The Hammer" but off the top of my head, cannot remember who had that nickname. Hammerin Henry Armstrong is all I can think of at the moment

I think my favorite Henry Armstrong nickname might is Hurricane Hank. Mostly because of how we really do give actual hurricanes names like that. It makes him sound like an actual storm personified.
LITTLE JOE LITTLE JOE likes this.

Agree and Hurricane is more a more appropriate nickname for him.

            Some of my Favs:

Hen The Game Chicken - LPRR era

            Rump Steak - also LPRR

The Three Farts - Pugni era, bonus: he fought and beat a man called The Nose. That's right, The Three Farts defeated The Nose....just ****ing fun.

That is a good one, Jack Hammer Lane from LPRR

Wasn't someone called thew Hebrew Hammer? I know there's a tv movie by that name because when I search it that's the overwhelming result but I'm pretty sure there was a Hebrew Hammer way before that movie.

Michael "Second To" Nunn was not bad.

As for the why, well - it's self-explanatory. And I wasn't even a fan of him. But the nickname is nice.

Simply an amazing play on words.

                      Best I can figure/recall . . .

I grew up with the grown-ups around me referring to Armstrong as "Hammerin Hank" not "Homicide Hank" as Boxrec posts. But when it became obvious that Hank Aaron had a realistic chance to catch Babe Ruth's HR record the media started applying the name to Aaron (Hammerin). It's pretty much his now; it seems lost Armstrong.
