You must have a different definition of Prime.
To me, Prime means at your best. This has been discussed by Pro boxers, writers, and Trainers about Tyson at that time and they agree Tyson was not at his best. You can watch tape and tell he was not at his best.
This is why I brought in the poll of this question to clear things up:
"Could any version of Tyson post-Rooney {Spinks} beat Tyson while with Rooney during his years as Champion {Berbick-Spinks}?
What's your answer?
Douglas, for what its worth, was also a good fighter when he trained. McCall, who lost to Douglas, called him his toughest fight and said Douglas hit him harder than Lennox Lewis. Buster's jab was also praised by Holyfield for knocking a man down with that shot. Buster was a 6'3, 230 pound fighter with a long reach and was very athletic. He put together some good wins leading up to Tyson. He was no bum and he was young and motivated at that time. Shame that motivation dropped right after he beat Tyson.Comment

I only bring such things up when the are outside the controll of the fighter. If something is his own damn fault, then he lost deservedly and has no room to complain. I happen to like Lewis but you'll never hear me excuse his losses to McCall and Rahman. He didn't show up focused and he paid the price, too bad. Those things a fighter has control over that he slacks at ultimately effect his overall standing as a fighter. Tua is a good example: He lost considerable standing by coming into fights undertrained and overweight. That Tua's fault not anyone elses and is part of how we evaluate how good a fighter he was.

Is there any solid evidence that Dempsey was broke and had no food? or did he blow all his money etc (other reasons).Comment

Do we know for sure that guys like Dempsey had no choice? I fully agree that coming in under trained is their own damn fault, It takes extreme dedication to put in month after month of training prior to fights.

The post-press-conference after the Spinks fight where Tyson says "this might be my last fight" is a good thing to look at to see where he was mentally. That may be proof enough he had enough with boxing and the media that comes with it; but if he felt he had enough, retire; don't sabotage your career because you don't know how to get out. It’s quite easy: “I retire.” Ok, maybe not that easy given his age and what he was taught and there wasn’t much else he could do as a career, but you still have to put all of that aside and if you don’t want to do it anymore…….RETIRE. He had money and youth to figure it out away from boxing.
He seemed more confused on what he wanted to do, but I don't know for sure....I'm not him.
But the point still remains: If he was going to do what he did right after Spinks, he should have retired.Comment

That I can't answer with any degree of certainty. Manchine is probably a better source. I DO know that much of Dempsey's early career was riding the rails and fighting in logging camps so I can't imagine he was properly nurished and in decent health much of the time.

The Tunney fights was all his fault. He was chasing beaver for 3 years while Tunney was active. When he came back, that pitbull within was left inside the women he enjoyed.Comment
