I have always been convinced that had Floyd stayed at lightheavy he would have been talked about among the all time greats. His chin wouldn't have been near the question mark it was at heavy.

Thanks for the info on the Patterson bio. Right now I am reading Larry Holmes autobiography, but when Im done I will look for a copy of Floyds book.
I like your hypothesis here Jab. Sometimes our gifts are our curses... The heavyweight era patterson entered was IMO misjudged by many. The idea that it was a relatively weak era is counterbalanced by the general level of an average fighter back then. Guys had skills, there was a strong foundation for the sport, and watching fights one can see skills a plenty. Patterson, like Tunney had enough resources to lay a claim to heavyweight greatness, and as one would expect, he did. One could easily put him on a list of the greatest light heavies... I would love to watch a fantasy match of Patterson versus Tunney.

Running into the man who some of us think may be the best heavyweight ever (at his best) was not something Patterson could overcome. And who can blame him? Liston was a fantastic fighter and had the size, tools and attitude... here was no path for Patterson to take.

Had very well developed skills and yes, reflexes. Also a very good salt by all accounts of those who knew him. I put him up there with Tunney as a technical marvel@ light heavy.

So how would Floyd P. do against the HW champions from Tunney to Louis exclusive? Okay to include Tunney if you want--Tunney, Sharkey, Schmeling, Braddock, Baer. No need to include Carnera.
