I see. A bit offtopic, but was Dempsey by any chance racist aswell? I have no idea about this, im just wondering.
supposedly dempsy wasnt a racist, its kinda iffy to say if he was or he wasnt, he signed to fight harry wills but dempsys handlers didnt honor the contract and instead signed to fight tunney (imo there would of been a black heavyweight champ pre louis if wills woulda fought dempsy, since dempsy wasnt an active champ at all)
but back on topic, ive heard stories about how strong jeffries was in close, maybe true but if the saying is true in boxing for an older boxer the last thing to go is power, but he didnt have that in the fight with johnson thats for sure, johnson messed him up. I think jeffries was more powerful in clinches, not in punching power or anything....but of course he couldnt of outpowered a foreman or a ali for that matter. One reason why i think so many say he was strong is cause thats all they saw, him and his wrasslin his opponents.
I don't hate white fighters, I hate racist fighters.
I agree, and I am very happy to see you feel that way, because judging a man by the color of his skin is one of the worst things a human being can do. But, you must consider the time period that Jeffries lived in.
as far as in-ring, functional strength goes, i've heard alot of stories about this guy being a phenomenally strong mofo. how did his ability to man-handle opponents compare (at least p4p since HW's were obviously smaller back then) to guys like george foreman or lennox lewis?
- -Foreman stronger than Lewis, and Jeffries prime around the same poundage.
Reputedly he could cover 100 yrds in 10 sec flat and hauled a 200 lb Cali buck on his shoulders several miles back to camp.
I knew a man who was naturally stronger than either Foreman or Jefferies. It is true he worked like a beast of burden and noticed what work did to his muscles... But he would have out gripped them both. Never lifted a barbel in his life.
