LOL!!! I'd forgotten about the follow up head-butt. He did whack him with his noggin' didn't he. ****. That might as had as much to do with the wobbly leg routine as the hook. I actually think Williams quit in that one. He was fine until the ref was wiping his gloves off and then he blinked and fell backwards into the ropes. I don't think he wanted anymore.

Cayton and Jaccobs would send out VHS tapes of his fights to various sportswriters to get a buzz going, which was something that had never been done before. I also think that's why he's as overated by some as he is...all that marketing. Just like people will by a product if it is correctly advertised and "sold" to them, many can't let go of the sensational marketing that surrounded Tyson. Unfortunately, there is also an equally strong backlash agaisnt him, which deprives him of what credit he does deserve.

I think it will be years before his career can accurately be ascertained, really, because of this phenomenon.
The same media that built him to such great heights did a complete 180 stripped him bare and tore him down. This guy was exposed ***** and all to the point that by the end of his career he was a parody of himself saying outrageous things to reporters because he knew that no matter what he said his words weren't going to be respected or put in the right context. He was unlike any other champion in that he was under the microscope from day one. Fighters of the past were less than perfect role models but were sugar coated or outright shielded from media exposure. Imagine if the press had known (or revealed) of Joe Louis drinking heavily, ********, womanizing, committing adultry and sleeping with white women during his title reign. He would have been vilified in that day and age.

Excellent point and oh so true. It's sad, really and I have to wonder what or who sparked the turn around because the dramatic shift almost reaks of "payback" to an extent.

Ali had a 17 year old mistress that he got pregnant around the time of the Foreman fight. Try that scandal on for size nowadays!

The media are vultures. Except for on-air morning show radio personalities. I love those guys!

They are Tyson give them what they wanted every single time....he knew that what ever he would do, they will run with it, so he knew that game he was playing....in fact he still is....Tyson...in my book never had a chance for true greatness in my book...to short....if he didn;t KO you in the early rounds his stamina got the best of him....he was not a deencive boxer could be hit at ease by taller guys...Buster was the only one that exploited that fat, he was there for the stiff jab...like I mentioned Buster is a friend and we have talk about this issue at lenght...and if someone knew on ow to fight Tyson that was Buster and Johnny Johnson....

Tyson had flaws for sure. He didn't concentrate enough on the body and for a fighter of his stature and reach never really learned to fight effectively enough on the inside. I'm also not a big fan of the peek-a-boo stance side to side head movement style which is taxing over a long fight. It's not surprising that Tyson's technique usually deviated later in a fight.

I think u have to give alot of credit to Tysons style in the ring. People were scared of him for a good reason. He was a very fast very hard puncher.
IMO thats why people were scared of him wen he was first champion. The Tyson that came out of prison without the skills he once had, relied on his 'baddest man on the planet' tag that the media created. Alot of fighters quit. Whereas pre-Tyson opponents where KO'd.

First, i dont think he could be hit at ease at all. He slipped long jabs and countered very well. In the later rounds he was easier to hit. But no one ever hit Tyson at ease wen he was at his best.
Buster fought the perfect fight. Early he clinched, but then as he released Tyson he hit him with big combos. Then later on he got his jab working as Tyson stood off him and allowed him the space.
Tyson at his best (with Rooney), would have been told not to give Douglas that space.

Basically, against Douglas, Tyson was still young and fast, but his technique was poor that night. As it was as soon as Rooney left him.

I think Tyson would have KO'd him in a rematch.

Buster Douglas is your friend? Well, not that he knows me; but tell him K-DOGG said thank you for that one night of greatness he showed against Tyson. It was a thing of beauty, indeed.
