You got to remeber another great thing about Tyson. He helped to get this sport off it's knees back in the 80's. He's still doing it, I bcame a huge boxing fan of Tysons and the sport in general 6 months after the Tyson vs Mcbride fight. It was sad though that I never got to see Tyson fight live.

Man you are lucky. I hope we get another Marciano/Tyson/Dempsey type of fighter again some day.

It'll happen someday; but whoever it is will be unique in their own way. You never get "another" great one....you just get another "great" one....if that makes any sense.

Combine that image with often repeated "the hard luck kid gets taken under the wing of the svengali" Cus D'amato relationship and it was only natural that it would be eaten up by the boxing scribes looking for the next big thing. It didn't hurt that Tyson was a KO artist, the type of fighter that makes the regular man on the street (ie:casual boxing fan) sit up and take notice.
I think it will be years before his career can accurately be ascertained, really, because of this phenomenon.

Well, honestly, I think it was that right hand and follow up combo in the first round that had Smith holding on for dear life in that fight. And Williams I actually believe came to fight because he was doing pretty well until that left hook landed; but you're right about Tyson intimidating many of his opponents. Most were beaten before the pre-fight introductions.
