Andre Ward is an excellent fighter and I see him as a future p4p guy like Jones or Mayweather, but in a different way image wise. I see him as the quintessential athlete, a guy who doesn't have to be a villian type or talk shit to be successful. He'll be a JOrdan type, who you like and respect for the simple fact that he's so talented and likeable. Great prospect. Can't wait for him to take the next step up. :boxing:
Not that I don't like Mayweather and all his shit talking. It's even better that he always backs it up. :boxing: :boxing:
Sure it's a year of upsets, but Soliman does not meet the criteria for an upset. He is not YOUNGER. He is not FASTER. He is not more TECHNICAL. He may have a slight edge in power....but he is too straight ahead to cause Winky problems. If Winky could keep Tito at bay with relative ease, Soliman is just walking into a beating.
I personally like Soliman as a fighter, and he's the type to make most any fight interesting. But, let's not forget that most people predicted Tito to get to Winky over 12 rounds. If Tito couldn't, Soliman can't. :boxing:
First of all, Gatti-Cotto wouldn't be the mismatch everyone thinks it would be. Gatti is by no means an all time great, but he does have skills, can take a punch, and has a decent amount of pop in his mitts. I say it would be a tough fight for both.
Once I caught a Matthew Saad Muhammad fight and was pleasantly suprised.
I think the biggest issue with getting more recent fights is that the rights cost $$$.
Nonetheless, I would love to see some good old Meldrick Taylor or Pernell fights.
It's sad that ESPN had him as a main event a few months back. It was Fields vs. Saul Montana...
Tale of the Tape:
Tye Fields:
6' 9.5"
86" reach
30 yrs old
Saul Montana:
5' 11"
72" reach
34 yrs old
Saul Montana is a pretty decent fighter, but based on size difference alone, this fight should not have happened. :boxing:
It's stilla fight between Corrales and Castillo, the only thing changed is that a belt is not on the line. So what....it's more about pride for these two IMO....especially with the outcome of the first fight. I expect a great fight. :boxing:
Forced just like Hopkins forced Taylor into one, Corrales didnt want the rematch, and espacly so soon after..but the Castillo's "peoples" werent listening...
Thus the advent of the rematch clause. Almost every title holder is given a rematch clause should he lose. Otherwise, the new titleholder, like Taylor, could just duck the guy he barely beat, if at all, until he retires. Not fair. If the clause is in the contract, honor it.
Bro, after every title fight there isnt a rematch...are you knew to boxing? Did you not know Corrales didnt want to fight Castillo again, in the same year after that brutal fight "he" gave us, because he could and should outbox the shit out of Castillo like Casamayor did this time...
Did I say there was after every fight? Only fights I mentioned were Hopkins-Taylor and Corrales-Castillo. After both fights, the losers (i.e. Hopkins, Castillo), enacted the rematch clause to gurantee a rematch for the title they lost.
No, I am not new to boxing. Maybe you just aren't as informed as you think you are.
If belt dont mean anything, whyd they originally decide to fight for the belt?
I didn't say it doesn't mean anything, because what is professional boxing about? Becoming champion. Nobody says they wanna grow up and be a fringe contender. No kid idolizes DeMarcus Corley, although they should.
What I was saying, is regardless of whether or not a belt is on the line, the fight should be better than most recent ones, and we should all be happy it is taking place.
Plus, if you are a Showtime subscriber, this bitch is free. :boxing:
I can't believe anyone one these forums is talkin shit about Corrales or Castillo. These guys gave every fight fan a true blood and guts battle, and they are doing it again, tonight. You should be happy they are doing this and nothing less. :boxing:
Just read the post from Kid Achilles...
Great post...
See that's the difference here..
and what you're saying is just your opinion..
To the best of my knowledge, trash talking doesn't get you into the HOF either.. it's your record, performance, and what you have accomplished in the ring... not how loud you can run your mouth
Last time I checked Toney's accomplishments were more than enough to guarantee him a seat in the hall of fame. 3 titles, 3 weight classes, and still truckin. See you in Canastota.
Child,
Stop wasting my time, I am not talking to you here
Child, I think not. Talk all the shit you want...you don't know me.
I'm a grown ass man, and last time i checked, when you quote my post, you are talking to me.
Just his exploits at middleweight and supermiddleweight would get him HOF.
Shit, it took a prime Roy Jones to make people second guess him as being the best fighter at that time....and on top of that, Jones ducked him for a rematch. :boxing:
Good point, but you won't see my post count get that high. Notice how like half of my posts are from this weekend alone. Only post when I find interesting topics.
Or when someone gives me reason to.
I'll start out by saying: I don't see how anyone can dislike what James Toney does in the ring, and call themselves a boxing fan. And what Toney does in the ring is showcase technique and skill that's virtually uparalleled in the sport of boxing today.
Everyone knows that Toney's a former middleweight and pound for pound fighter who's won titles at 160, 168 and Cruiser, but there's been ongoing criticism about his tenure at Heavyweight.
From accusations of fighting poor opposition (laughable when you look at who the "title" holders have been fighting) to talk of him being a steroid monkey or a fatso.
The bottom line is that James Toney is a Hall of Fame fighter who's right in the thick of things in the current Heavyweight division.
After delivering Evander Holyfield a one sided and calculated beating, Toney has suffered from some bad injuries, but had returned to beat down and shut out previously undefeated Rydell Booker, and on 5 weeks notice humiliated and out pointed the limited yet ever present John Ruiz. After being stripped of his title because the medication he was on for his arm injury produced an illegal substance when he agreed to fight Ruiz on 5 weeks notice, Toney eyed a return to the ring in early October. With almost no top Heavyweight being available, Toney targeted the durable yet limited Guinn. As poor as Guinn had looked in losses to Barrett and Lyakhovich and a lackluster draw against Friday Ahunanya, he was always in those fights and very competitive. It wasn't long before that that the destruction of Michael Grant and thumping the mammoth Duncan Dokiwari had a lot of buzz around Guinn.
But in the ring against James Toney, a much naturally smaller and older man who gave up height, power and reach, Guinn was taken to school and humiliated.
In a lackluster Heavyweight division that's universally recognized as one of the low spots in it's history, James Toney put on a clinic of inside fighting, counter punching, and made a durable and hard hitting Heavyweight look like a sparring partner.
The bottom line is that if you have anything to say about a 37 year old future hall of famer James Toney campaigning at Heavyweight that's anything short of bewilderment and admiration, you're an idiot and not a true fan of the sport.
How would Toney fair against the likes of the Klitschko’s or Valuev giving away an almost ridiculous figures in height and reach? I don’t know, but having never seen Toney in any trouble, knowing his ability to slip and counter, and knowing he’s a fighter who’s strongest in rounds 10-12, I wouldn’t right him off in any of those fights.
As fat and old as James Toney is, he's unequivocally a top five Heavyweight at present, and a credible and top money fight for anyone in the division.
He’s called out Chris Byrd and Vitali Klitschko, and there’s no reason those fights can’t happen next.
So in conclusion, show some respect and give some props bitches. I shutter to think there was a bunch of idiots calling Archie Moore a fat “non Heavyweight” in the 1950’s. You’re watching a future hall of famer impressing and excelling at the end of his historic career.
Couldn't agree more. Preach on. :boxing:
Nonsense.. a world class boxer wouldn't last a minute..If you really did wrestling for 5 years you'd know that the boxing stance is the worst of all for mma type fights.
The fastest puncher in the world, the strongest one..wouldn't last long..A prime tyson would be delt with in no time...
What the fuck is a boxer gonna do, when the wrestler shoots for the legs? NOTHING!...his fucking punches won't stop anything because they can't reach so low to begin with.
If you really did wresltling and judo you'd know this.
This is a sport where the shittiest punchers in the world can beat the top ones because they don't have to deal with strikes.
What I'm saying, is in the standup, if a boxer is accurate and quick with his punches, he can catch a guy shooting for his legs. I'm not saying a boxer would win, but in the standup, he would have a distinct advantage. To seriously compete, you have to be well-rounded, and that's the idea with MMA. You can't just be a good striker or a good wrestler. You need to train in all facets of the fight game. Nonetheless, I'd love to see a skilled Cruiserweight fight Chuck Liddell in the standup, and see what happens.
Yea, I was watching that earlier. Pride fighting is fast paced and has 10 minute rounds. Pretty cool. Good to see Ken Shamrock in there kicking ass again.
last time I checked you were not involved in this conversation long enough... why don't you read the posts above before you start trolling in here...
We're not debating Toney's HOF materials here
This is not even a debate, nor argument... we're talking about trash talkers vs. non..
Last time I checked I have a life and can't read all your little posts to be "up tp date" enough....sorry.
Oh, and this is why I posted that:
To the best of my knowledge, trash talking doesn't get you into the HOF either.. it's your record, performance, and what you have accomplished in the ring... not how loud you can run your mouth ..
Let's think before we talk. It's boxing, and we're spectators. Don't be so damn serious about something you don't compete in. :boxing:
I enjoy MMA, although not nearly as much as boxing. I did Judo for 3 years and Wrestled for 5. I respect MMA fighters, but still maintain that a world class boxer could take out damn near any of them. Put a skilled counterpuncher in there, and there would be no ground game. With those small gloves, it wouldn't matter how much Jui-Jitsu they know, a knockout is a knockout.
So many of those guys who are so-called "strikers" are so tentative in there to a point where they don't land punches. Still, MMA interests me, as do all combat sports. Boxing is just the best. :boxing:
I just like the Gracies because I am interested in every facet of the fight game, and my Judo background keeps me interested in Jui-Jitsu. I'd still like to see some fighters go into the UFC using pure styles of Martial Arts, like Akido, to show some of these so-called Martial Artist what it really is about.
