Yes, Canelo said Cotto was tougher than Floyd but that was simply because it took him a long time to accept the Mayweather defeat. He personally blamed the weight and inexperience at the the top level for losing that fight. It wasn't until years later that he admitted that he felt great in the Mayweather fight and it was him that actually offered the 152 weight limit. But all that doesn't change the fact that he had a rough night with Cotto. In fact Mayweather and Canelo's faces were busted up after fighting Cotto.
As for the other bolded part, there was never a Mayweather/Cotto fight on the table back in their 140/147 days. And in my opinion Cotto was deathly afraid of Mayweather at 140 after witnessing what he did to Gatti first hand up close and personal.
